Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Ends Southern Trip With Setback at Saint Leo

  • The Short Story: The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team snapped a 4-4 tie with four consecutive goals and posted an 11-7 victory against Gannon Friday night at University Turf Stadium. The Lady Knights ended their southern trip to Georgia and Florida with a 1-2 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon took control first with a pair of unassisted goals by sophomore Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) during the opening nine minutes.
  • Saint Leo finally got on the board with 14:25 into the contest on a goal by Kelsey Burn. It started a 3-0 mini-run over the span of five minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Sophomore Kierstyn Haight (Oshawa, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) countered with the tying goal off an assist from junior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) at the 6:45 mark.
  • After another Saint Leo score, Haight produced another tying goal with 3:07 left in the first half.
  • Burns netted her third goal of the half with 2:23 remaining to send the Lions into the break with a 5-4 lead.
  • Saint Leo took control of the match with the first three goals of the second half to open an 8-4 advantage.
  • Gannon needed 10 minutes and 34 seconds to produce its first goal of the second half. Senior Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) accounted for the score. King added her third goal of the match 2:05 later, cutting the deficit to 8-6.
  • However, Saint Leo countered with three straight tallies to grab its biggest lead of the evening at 11-6 with 4:06 remaining.
  • Sophomore Kaitie Babiarz (Alpharetta, Ga./Johns Creek) added one more goal for Gannon with 1:20 to play, but the Lady Knights were unable to get any closer.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon out-shot St. Leo 21-20. After the Lady Knights held a 12-7 edge during the first half, the Lions generated a 13-9 advantage during the final 30 minutes.
  • Both teams won 10 draw controls each.
  • Gannon also held advantages in ground balls (19-14) and fewest turnovers (14-20).
  • King recorded her first hat trick of the season with three goals. She also had a team-high four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Haight led the team in ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (3) to go along with a pair of goals.
  • Babiarz and Hilker completed the scoring with one goal each.
  • Mitchell dished out Gannon's lone assist.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • King recorded her eighth career hat trick.
  • Haight scored multiple goals for the second time in three matches. She set career-highs in ground balls and turnovers.
  • Gannon fell to 0-3 all-time against Saint Leo, dropping decisions during the last three spring trips.
