Gannon Softball Team Splits Twinbill at the NTC Games for Fifth Consecutive Day

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team split its fifth consecutive doubleheader Friday afternoon at the National Training Center (NTC) Games in Clermont, Florida. The Lady Knights opened play with a 5-0 loss to Bloomfield, before rebounding with a 5-1 victory against Salem International.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • After three scoreless innings, Bloomfield broke through with a single run during the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The Bears later added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
  • Bloomfield pitcher Kirsten Wilson retired 11 consecutive Gannon hitters until senior Rachel deGuia (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) singled with one out during the top of the seventh inning. But Wilson was able to get the last two hitters out to secure a 5-0 shutout.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • deGuia and junior Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) recorded Gannon's only two hits.
  • Junior Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) suffered her first loss of the season in five decisions after allowing four earned runs on seven hits. She struck out five and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gumbita recorded her 28th career complete game and fifth of the season.
  • Both deGuia and Moran recorded hits for the second consecutive game.
  • Gumbita walked zero batters for the third time in five starts this season.
  • Gannon was shut out for the third time at the NTC Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon erased the shutout early in the second game, scoring three times during its first at-bat.
  • Sophomore Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a bunt single by sophomore Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and scored on a single to left field by senior Alyssa Bates (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield).
  • Salerno scored the second run on deGuia's sacrifice bunt, before Bates scored on a single to left field by senior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads).
  • Gannon slowly extended its lead to 5-0 with single runs in the second and third. Freshman Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) drew a lead-off walk in the second and later scored on a ground-out by Moran.
  • deGuia led off the third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to center field by freshman Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda).
  • Salem International tallied its only run in the fourth, but was unable to score again off Gannon freshman Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township).
  • The Tigers' biggest rally came in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out, but Perich got out of the jam with a ground-out and strikeout.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Smith highlighted the offensive attack by reaching bases during all three at-bats. She finished 2-for-2 with one run and one walk.
  • Perich earned her first career victory with her second complete game. She allowed one run on six hits, striking out five and walking none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon improved to 11-0 all-time against Salem International.
  • Five different Lady Knights recorded one hit, five scored one run and five had one RBI.
  • Perich tied a season-high with five strikeouts.
  • Smith recorded her first two career hits during her second career start.
