HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon's offense remained red hot in Florida with another double-digit run outburst. It started immediately with two runs during the top of the first inning. Senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double by redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills). After moving to third on a ground-out, DeVita scored on a sacrifice fly by redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
  • The University of Mary responded with two runs of its own to tie the score at two in the bottom of the frame.
  • After a scoreless second inning, Gannon exploded for five runs during the top of the third. Wiesen was the catalyst again, drawing a lead-off walk and scoring on DeVita's triple. DeVita then scored on a wild pitch.
  • Senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) restarted the inning with a double and later scored on an RBI ground-out by sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). Sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) tripled home Cardy with the fourth run of the inning and scored on a wild pitch to give the Golden Knights a 7-2 lead.
  • Gannon blew the game wide open with six more runs during the top of the fourth inning. Beer and Cardy drove in the first two runs with RBI singles. After an error allowed the third run to score, sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) ripped a two-run double to left center. A sacrifice fly by Oruch later in the frame pushed the lead to 13-2.
  • The Golden Knights pushed across a 14th run in the fifth when redshirt junior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) scored on a Beer double.
  • The University of Mary managed one more run during the bottom of the fifth, before junior Ryan Hancy (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) and freshman Taylor Lane (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) tossed scoreless innings of relief to finish off a 14-3 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • DeVita went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.
  • Wiesen reached base all three times he batted, finishing 1-for-1 with three runs and two walks.
  • Beer had three hits in four at-bats in the third spot of the lineup, producing two runs and two RBIs.
  • Cox, DeVita, Beer, Cardy and Oruch drove in multiple runs, led by Cox's three RBIs.
  • Redshirt junior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) improved to 2-0 with five innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked two.
  • Hancy tossed a scoreless sixth inning with only one hit allowed.
  • Lane used a double play to face the minimum in the seventh.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's top three spots of the lineup finished 10-for-13 with nine runs and four RBIs.
  • The Golden Knights' 14 runs represented only the third-highest single-game total this spring. The 16 hits were one shy of the season-high (17) set against Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday.
  • DeVita tied a career-high with four hits, matching his total during a 12-9 victory against Indiana (Pa.) on April 19, 2014.
  • Wiesen scored three runs in a game for the fourth time this season while DeVita accomplished the feat for the second time.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • The offense didn't slack off during the second game as the Golden Knights immediately scored twice during their first at-bat. Wiesen led off again with a single, stole second and scored on Beer's RBI single down the right field line. Cardy followed with a triple to right center that scored Beer.
  • Back-to-back lead-off singles by Oruch and redshirt senior Bobby Roach (Erie, Pa./McDowell) started the second. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic), Wiesen's single up the middle scored Oruch for a 3-0 lead.
  • Gannon engineering an eight-run third inning that sealed the deal. Cardy, Oruch, Restuccia and DeVita had RBIs as the Golden Knights extended their lead to 8-0. Beer capped the outburst with a three-run double down the left field line.
  • The lead stretched to 13-0 with single runs during the fourth and fifth innings. Cox scored in the fourth on Roach's sacrifice fly. Beer crossed the plate in the fifth on junior Andrew Wagner's (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) two-out RBI single.
  • The University of Mary broke the shutout with three runs on four hits during the top of the sixth inning.
  • But Gannon just wouldn't stop hitting as it tacked on another two runs during its turn in the sixth. Both runs scored on junior Scotty Cloudy's (Parma, Ohio/Buckeye) single to center field.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Beer led the way with a 3-for-4 showing, three runs and four RBIs.

  • The Golden Knights scored first for the 11th time in 13 games.
  • Gannon had 17 hits in a game for the second time this season.
