Gannon Baseball Team Pounds Out 32 Runs in Sweep at UPJ; Extends Best Start in Program History With Ninth Straight Win

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team scored 32 runs and pounded out 37 hits while sweeping a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Pitt-Johnstown. The results completed the Golden Knights' second consecutive four-game sweep and extended their win streak to nine games.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon jumped out to a 9-0 lead with six runs during the top of the first inning and three more in the second. The Golden Knights sent 11 batters to the plate in the first. Five of the six runs scored after two outs.
  • Junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) had a two-run single in the first. Senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) and sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) added RBI hits. The remaining two runs scored on a balk and ground-out.
  • Gannon scored three runs after two quick outs in the second. Sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) singled home the first run, before Restuccia plated two with a single up the middle.
  • Pitt-Johnstown scored its only run during the bottom of the second inning.
  • Gannon capped the scoring and blew the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning. The Golden Knights sent 10 batters to the plate during the outburst.
  • Redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) ignited the inning with a three-run homer to left field. Restuccia later added a two-out, two-run double before redshirt junior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) gave Gannon a 16-1 lead with an RBI single.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Restuccia and Cox led the way with three hits each. Restuccia went 3-for-4 with two runs and six RBIs while Cox finished 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
  • Wiesen, Cardy and Oruch chipped in two hits each.
  • Cox, Oruch, Wiesen, Cardy, Restuccia, senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) and sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored multiple runs.
  • Junior Santiago Mendez (Potterville, Mich./Lansing Eastern) remained undefeated in five decisions, allowing one run on five hits through six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
  • Freshman Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) completed the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights scored first for the 21st time in the opening 24 games.
  • Gannon reached double digits in scoring for the ninth time this season.
  • The Golden Knights recorded at least 17 hits for the fourth time this year.
  • Gannon had multiple innings of six runs or more in the same game for the first time since producing a 10-run inning and nine-run inning during a 20-18 victory at Indiana (Pa.) on April 18, 2009.
  • Wiesen moved past Tim Lipp (2009-12) and into Gannon's all-time top five with his 109th career run.
  • Mendez lowered his earned run average to a 1.42 mark while moving to 5-0.
  • Restuccia's career-high six RBIs were the most by a Golden Knight since Michael Tomko had six during a 20-4 home victory against Clarion on March 25, 2012.
  • Benack extended his hit streak to nine games. DeVita pushed his streak to eight contests.
  • Gannon won its eighth consecutive game.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon opened the scoring with Cardy's RBI single during the top of the first inning.
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead to 4-0 with a three-run spot in the second. Wiesen started the second-inning blitz with a sacrifice fly, before Cardy plated two with a two-out single through the right side.
  • Pitt-Johnstown rallied with three runs of its own in the second inning, but Gannon immediately responded with three scores in the third. After a run-scoring fielder's choice by Grimone, redshirt senior Mark DeVita's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) two-out, two-run single push the Golden Knights' lead to 7-3.
  • The Mountain Cats pulled within a run again after a three-run fourth inning.
  • As it did previously, Gannon immediately responded with runs during its next at-bat. The Golden Knights tallied two runs in the fifth inning on RBI infield singles by DeVita and Beer.
  • The fifth inning started a run of nine unanswered Gannon runs during the final three frames.
  • A Wiesen two-run double combined RBI singles from Grimone and DeVita to generate a four-run sixth inning, giving the Golden Knights a 13-6 advantage.
  • Cardy led off the seventh inning with his second home run of the afternoon. Cox later singled home the 15th run, before the final run scored on a fielder's choice. 

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • DeVita and Oruch headlined the nightcap's offensive explosion with four hits each. DeVita went 4-for-6 with one run and four RBIs while Oruch finished 4-for-5 with three runs.
  • Cardy recorded a 3-for-5 showing with one run and four RBIs.
  • Cox had three hits in five at-bats, scoring three times and driving home one run.
  • Wiesen and Grimone recorded three RBIs each.
  • Freshman Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) improved to 3-1 with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
  • Junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished off the sweep with two hitless innings of relief. He struck out two and walked one.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights swept their fourth consecutive doubleheader and seventh of the season. It represents the most sweeps in a season since at least the 1999 campaign.
  • Gannon scored first for the 22nd time in 25 games.
  • The Golden Knights extended their win streak to nine games, representing the program's longest streak since at least 1999. 
  • Gannon has started its PSAC schedule 8-0 for the first time since joining the league prior to the 2008-09 academic year.
  • The Golden Knights are off to their best 25-game start in school history.
  • Gannon has won its first eight conference games for the first time in school history.
  • The Golden Knights have already surpassed last year's overall victory total (17) and conference win total (7) despite it only being March 26.
  • Gannon reached double digits in runs during both games of a doubleheader for the third time this season.
  • The Golden Knights pounded out a season-high 20 hits, recording the most in a game since having 22 during a 21-1 victory at Indiana (Pa.) on April 1, 2008.
  • Benack kept his team-high hit streak alive at 10 games. DeVita extended his streak to nine contests.
  • Wiesen jumped Gannon Hall of Famer Nick Leslie (2000-04) and Clint Page (1997-00) on Gannon's all-time runs list, moving into third place with 112 career runs.
