Gannon Softball Team Records Second Consecutive Split at NTC Games in Florida

  • The Short Story: Sophomore Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a suicide squeeze by freshman Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) as the Gannon softball team posted a 1-0 eight-inning victory against Tiffin Monday afternoon at the National Training Center Games in Clermont, Florida. The Lady Knights gained their second consecutive split after dropping a 3-0 decision to Findlay in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Findlay dented the scoreboard first with a single run during the second inning, before adding two insurance runs in the sixth.
  • Gannon's best scoring chances came in the first and third innings. The Lady Knights left runners on first and second during their first at-bat. The squad then left the bases loaded in the third.
  • The Lady Knights put runners on base during four of their first five at-bats, but went down in order during the final two innings.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Four different Lady Knights recorded one hit each.
  • Senior Alison Benz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Mount Mercy Academy) went the distance during her first start of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits. She struck out five and walked two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Martinez extended her hitting streak dating back to last season to seven games.
  • Gannon was shut out for the first time since April 21, 2014 against California, a span of 58 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Neither team was able to score in regulation.
  • Tiffin put runners on second and third base with one out during the top of the eighth inning, but junior Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) struck out the next two hitters to retire the side.
  • Salerno was placed on second base to start the bottom of the inning. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and scored the winning run on Perich's suicide squeeze.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Perich finished 2-for-4 with the game's only RBI.
  • Martinez, Salerno and senior Alyssa Bates (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) recorded one hit each.
  • Gumbita improved to 2-0 with an eight-inning shutout, scattering six hits. She struck out eight and walked five.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Martinez extended her hitting streak dating back to last season to eight games.
  • Gumbita recorded her 25th career complete game and sixth career shutout while lowering her ERA to 1.20 through 15 innings this spring.
  • Gannon played its second extra-inning affair during the first four games of the season.
  • The Lady Knights recorded their first 1-0 shutout since March 1, 2015 against St. Rose (N.Y.) at the NTC Games.
  • Gannon recorded its first 1-0 extra-inning victory since March 27, 2010 against Lock Haven in eight innings.
