HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • After a pair of scoreless innings, the two clubs combined to score five runs during the third inning.
  • Gannon struck first with three runs during the top of the frame. Archambeault and Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) had back-to-back one-out singles and moved up a base after an error. Archambeault scored the game's first run when she came home on a second error. Junior Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) later plated two runs with a two-out double.
  • Notre Dame (Ohio) responded with two runs of its own during the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
  • Gannon added an insurance run during the fifth. With one out, sophomore Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) singled and scored on sophomore Nathaly Pacheco's (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower) double.
  • Notre Dame put two runners on base in the sixth and one in the seventh, but was unable to scratch out another run.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Martinez went 2-for-4 with two runs out of the lead-off spot.
  • Archambeault finished 2-for-3 with one run.
  • Moran recorded two of Gannon's three RBIs.
  • Junior Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits. She struck out two and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The contest represented Gannon's season opener.
  • Archambeault and Martinez extended their hitting streaks dating back to last season to six and five games, respectively.
  • Six of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.
  • The Lady Knights won their season opener for the third time in the last four years.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Wheeling Jesuit scored first during the bottom of the second inning.
  • Gannon flipped the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Pacheco led off with a single and immediately scored the tying run on Moran's double to left center. Two outs later, senior Rachel deGuia (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) singled home Moran with the go-ahead run.
  • The Lady Knights increased their lead to 3-1 in the sixth. Archambeault had a lead-off single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Perich and scored on Martinez's single to left field.
  • Wheeling Jesuit rallied with the tying runs during the bottom of the seventh inning. The tying run scored on an infield single with two outs.
  • The Cardinals ended the game during the bottom of the eighth inning in crazy fashion. After loading the bases with no outs, Kelci Thompson grounded back to Perich who threw home for the out. Thompson was then called out at first base for not touching the base. As Wheeling Jesuit came onto the field to argue the call, the runner from second base scored to end the game.
