Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Drops Pair of Matches at Bucknell Tournament

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team opened the Bucknell Tournament with a pair of losses against NCAA Division I programs Saturday at the Kinney Natatorium. The Lady Knights began the day with an 11-7 setback against George Washington, before falling 17-5 against No. 25 Bucknell.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE
  • Gannon twice grabbed one-goal leads during the first quarter against George Washington after scores by sophomore Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) and senior Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell).
  • The Colonials answered both times and tied the match at two with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • The match featured its third tie when junior Kayla Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Milford) knotted the affair at three with 4:14 left in the second quarter.
  • George Washington then reversed the tide with the final three goals of the frame to assume a 6-3 lead at the intermission.
  • Gannon came out of the break with the first two goals of the second half, pulling within 6-5 on a pair of scores from Barr.
  • As they did in the second quarter, the Colonials ended the third stanza with three consecutive goals for a 9-5 advantage.
  • The two teams then split four goals during the final eight minutes, before the final horn sounded to signal an 11-7 George Washington victory.

  • Gannon opened the third-quarter scoring on Cooney's tally 28 seconds after the opening sprint-off.
  • However, the home squad then ripped off the last seven goals of the quarter and went to the final stanza with a 14-2 advantage.
  • The two teams split the fourth quarter's six goals. Barr scored two of Gannon's three goals while Cooney recorded the third.
