Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Drops Pair of Matches at Bucknell Tournament

The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team opened the Bucknell Tournament with a pair of losses against NCAA Division I programs Saturday at the Kinney Natatorium. The Lady Knights began the day with an 11-7 setback against George Washington, before falling 17-5 against No. 25 Bucknell.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE

Gannon twice grabbed one-goal leads during the first quarter against George Washington after scores by sophomore Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) and senior Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell).
The Colonials answered both times and tied the match at two with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.
The match featured its third tie when junior Kayla Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Milford) knotted the affair at three with 4:14 left in the second quarter.
George Washington then reversed the tide with the final three goals of the frame to assume a 6-3 lead at the intermission.
Gannon came out of the break with the first two goals of the second half, pulling within 6-5 on a pair of scores from Barr.
As they did in the second quarter, the Colonials ended the third stanza with three consecutive goals for a 9-5 advantage.
The two teams then split four goals during the final eight minutes, before the final horn sounded to signal an 11-7 George Washington victory.

MATCH NOTES

Barr led Gannon in goals (4) and steals (4).
Villano, Lazenby and sophomore Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) chipped in one goal each.
Lazenby also had three steals.
Sophomore Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley Liberal Arts) recorded three field blocks.
Junior Emily Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) started her sixth consecutive match in goal, making five saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH TWO

Bucknell took control early, shutting out Gannon 5-0 during the first quarter.
The Lady Knights finally got on the board when Villano scored 37 seconds into the period.
Bucknell answered with two more goals and went to halftime holding a 7-1 lead.
Gannon opened the third-quarter scoring on Cooney's tally 28 seconds after the opening sprint-off.
However, the home squad then ripped off the last seven goals of the quarter and went to the final stanza with a 14-2 advantage.
The two teams split the fourth quarter's six goals. Barr scored two of Gannon's three goals while Cooney recorded the third.

MATCH NOTES

Barr and Cooney led the Gannon offensive unit with two goals each. Barr also led the team with four steals.
Villano was the only other Lady Knight to score.
Emily Rodriguez started her seventh consecutive match in goal, making six saves through three quarters.
Freshman Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa. / Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) played the fourth quarter between the pipes, turning away two shots and allowing three scores.
