  • Location: Winter Haven, Fla. - Chain of Lakes Park
  • The Short Story: Junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) struck out 14 hitters while tossing an eight-inning shutout to help the Gannon baseball team open its Florida trip with a split against former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) counterpart Findlay at the Russ-Matt Invitational.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon scored the game's only run during the bottom of the eighth inning without the aid of a hit.
  • Junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) led off the frame with a walk. Senior Sean Sutton (Toronto, Ontario/Brebeuf College) then reached first base while trying to bunt Wiesen to second base. Redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) followed with a hit by pitch to load the bases. One out later, Cox drew a walk that pushed Wiesen across the plate with the game-winning run.
  • Findlay had two great scoring chances shut down by Cox. The Oilers had a one-out triple in the sixth inning, but Cox induced a grounder to short before striking out the final hitter.
  • The Oilers led off the eighth inning with a pair of singles, but Cox responded with back-to-back strikeouts. After a passed ball pushed the runners to second and third, Cox shut down the threat by striking out the side.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Cox struck out 14 hitters and walked none en route to an eight-inning shutout.
  • Four different Golden Knights recorded a hit.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Cox hasn't allowed a run during his first 15 innings after throwing a no-hitter at Limestone (S.C.) during his season debut. The right-hander has struck out 24 hitters and walked none during his two starts.
  • Gannon won a game with four hits or less for the first time since winning 5-0 at Clarion on April 13, 2014 behind four hits.
  • The Golden Knights posted their first 1-0 shutout since winning a 14-inning affair April 5, 2013 against Indiana (Pa.).

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon led 3-2 after the two teams produced five one-run innings.
  • The Golden Knights drew first blood with a run during their first at-bat. Wiesen walked to lead off the game, moved to second on Sutton's sacrifice bunt and scored on Bellanca's double to right center.
  • After Findlay tied the game in the second inning, Gannon forged back ahead during the top of the third inning. Wiesen walked again and moved to second on Sutton's single through the right side. Bellanca loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch, before Wiesen scored on a fielder's choice.
  • The Oilers responded with the tying run in the bottom of the frame only to see Gannon immediately jump back in front with the same first-inning formula during its next at-bat. Senior Eric Lewandowski (Souderton, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded a lead-off single up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt junior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and scored on a double by freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson).
  • Findlay posted the decisive runs during the bottom of the fifth inning. After an infield single and sacrifice bunt, Roman Kuster's double tied the game at three. Two batters later, Troy Merriman drove home the winning run with a single to center field.
  • Gannon's best chance to tie the contest came in the sixth inning. The Golden Knights put runners on second and third, but a ground-out ended the threat.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Six different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Benack recorded his first career hit and RBI during his collegiate debut.
  • Wiesen scored two of Gannon's three runs, scoring both times after drawing walks.
  • Senior Matt Wilwohl (Erie, Pa./McDowell) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has opened the season with three consecutive doubleheader splits, winning the first game of all three twinbills.
  • The Golden Knights have opened the season with three straight splits for the first time since at least the 1999 campaign.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues its week-long stay at the Russ-Matt Invitational Monday, March 2 with a pair of nine-inning games.
  • The Golden Knights open the day against Lewis (Ill.) at 2 p.m., before locking horns with Grand Valley State at 6 p.m. The Lakers are ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division II.
