Gannon Men's Basketball Team Comes Up Shy in 105-102 Double-Overtime Loss at Edinboro (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Edinboro 105, Gannon 102 (2 ot)
  • Records: Gannon (2-8, 1-6 PSAC), Edinboro (6-3, 6-1 PSAC)
  • Location: Edinboro, Pa. - McComb Fieldhouse
  • The Short Story: Senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) scored a career-high 32 points and the Gannon men's basketball team shot 54 percent from the floor Wednesday night at rival Edinboro, but it proved to be not enough as the Fighting Scots fended off the Golden Knights 105-102 in double overtime. It was the second double-overtime contest and highest-scoring affair in the 102-game all-time series.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening nine minutes saw three ties and three lead changes, before Gannon took control. Toupane snapped an 11-11 tie with a three-pointer, igniting a 7-0 run. Sophomore Isaiah Eisendorf (Los Angeles, Calif. Springbrook, Md.) and junior Kevin Kuteyi (Lanham, Md./Duval) followed with jumpers for an 18-11 lead with 10:40 remaining in the first half.
  • After Edinboro clawed back within 20-18, Gannon responded with an 11-2 blitz. Eight straight points from Kuteyi, including back-to-back triples, gave the Golden Knights their largest lead of the evening at 31-20 with 6:35 showing on the clock.
  • But what appeared to be a safe lead turned into a halftime deficit as Edinboro bounced off the deck to out-score Gannon 25-4 during the final six minutes and one second. Edinboro went 10-of-12 from the field during the stretch while the Golden Knights were 1-for-10 with four turnovers.
  • Edinboro's Sheldon Brogdon's three-pointer with 36 seconds left push the home team into the break with a 45-35 advantage.
  • The Fighting Scots maintained their edge through the first half of the second stanza and held their largest lead of the evening at 62-51 with 12:44 to play.
  • Trailing 69-61, Gannon ripped off eight straight points to pull even. Freshman Max Kerr (Erie, Pa./McDowell) started the run with a pair of free throws and tied the contest with two more at the 7:25 mark.
  • It was the first of six ties during the remainder of regulation.
  • Gannon tied the game at 77 on a Kuteyi lay-up and moved ahead on a jumper from Toupane with 2:07 remaining.
  • After exchanging baskets and creating another deadlock, both teams went 1-of-2 from the foul line during the final 33 seconds to force overtime.
  • Neither team produced a lead larger than two points during the first overtime. Gannon held a 91-90 lead after another Toupane lay-up, but an Edinboro free throw tied the game with 34 seconds left. Both squads missed potential game-winners during the final 15 seconds.
  • The second overtime featured another four ties and three lead changes.
  • Gannon lead 98-97, before Jaymon Mason sandwiched a lay-up from senior Tony Boykins (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) between consecutive triples to push Edinboro in front 103-100.
  • Edinboro later led 104-102 after going 1-of-2 from the foul line with 22 seconds left, but Gannon was unable to get a clean shot off with its shooter falling to the ground on a drive with three seconds left. One more Edinboro freebie then sealed the 105-102 double-overtime victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Toupane led the Gannon scoring attack with his first career double-double, scoring a career-high 32 points and tying a career-high with 10 rebounds. He finished 13-of-21 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
  • Kuteyi followed with 19 points, reaching double digits for the third consecutive game.
  • Eisendorf tallied a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds, hitting 8-of-13 shots.
  • Freshman Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn./St. Thomas More) completed Gannon's group of double-double scorers with 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds.
  • Kerr came off the bench to play 27 minutes, scoring a season-high nine points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. He made his only field goal attempt and was perfect in six free throws.
  • Gannon shot 54.2 percent (39-72) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-14) from three-point range and 78.3 percent (18-23) from the free throw line.

  • Tommy Scales and Brogdon added 16 points each.
  • Edinboro shot 43.3 percent (29-67) from the floor, 30.8 percent (8-26) from behind the arc and 83 percent (39-47) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon produced a 54-28 edge in the paint, but Edinboro generated a 22-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • The contest featured 16 ties and 12 lead changes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Wednesday's game was only the second double-overtime contest in 102 games between Gannon and Edinboro. The Fighting Scots posted a 90-87 double-overtime win at the McComb Fieldhouse on December 7, 1983.
  • The 207 points represented the highest combined score in the all-time series. In fact, only once had a team gone over the 100-point plateau in the series. Gannon accomplished the feat during a 105-77 home victory on February 27, 1960.
  • The combined score was the highest involving a Gannon team since the Golden Knights posted a 113-94 home victory against Eastern Montana on January 3, 1973.
  • Wednesday was the first time both teams reached the 100-point plateau since Seton Hill won the 2011 Porreco Cup with a 103-100 double-overtime victory at the Hammermill Center.
  • Gannon dropped to 67-24 in games that featured a 100-point team and 8-17 on the road.
  • The Golden Knights dropped to 7-6 all-time in games that went at least two overtimes.
  • Gannon has dropped six consecutive regular-season games for the first time since January 6-30, 1960.
  • Edinboro defeated Gannon after being swept the last two seasons.
  • Gannon's 54.2-percent shooting was its best performance since shooting 59.6 percent (31-52) at Cheyney on December 20, 2014.
  • The Golden Knights set season-highs in assists (17) and blocks (4).
  • Edinboro's 39 free throws made and 47 free throw attempts were the most by a Gannon opponent since at least 2001-02.
