HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened the game hot, bolting out to a 10-2 lead 3:24 into the contest. Freshman Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn./St. Thomas More) scored the first four points, before three Golden Knights chipped in with two points each.
  • Pitt-Johnstown answered with a nine consecutive points to grab its first lead at 11-10 with 13:05 left in the first half.
  • It was the start of five lead changes during the next five minutes and seven seconds.
  • Pitt-Johnstown grabbed the lead for the rest of the first half on A.J. Leahey's three-pointer to assume a 17-15 advantage at the 7:58 mark.
  • Another 9-0 UPJ run later in the half gave the Mountain Cats their biggest lead of the evening at 31-19 with 2:47 left in the opening stanza.
  • Gannon mustered one more run before the final horn. The Golden Knights scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to 31-27. Junior Kevin Kuteyi (Lanham, Md./Duval) ignited the run with a three-pointer, before senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) converted an old-fashion three-point play and lay-up.
  • The two teams then split the final four points as UPJ went to the intermission with a 33-29 lead.
  • Pitt-Johnstown assumed a seven-point edge on three different occasions during the opening 5:30 of the second half, before Gannon generated eight consecutive points to regain the lead.
  • Senior Tony Boykins (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) converted a shot while being fouled to bring Gannon within 43-41. After a Toupane free throw, Kuteyi hit a jumper to give the Golden Knights a 44-43 lead with 10:23 to play. UPJ went 5:25 without a field goal during the run.
  • However, Pitt-Johnstown needed only 19 seconds to tie the game with a free throw and took the lead back on Dale Clancy's lay-up at the 9:04 mark. It was part of seven straight points as the Mountain Cats regained control 50-44 with 7:34 remaining.
  • Gannon made the game interesting down the stretch, using a mini 6-0 blitz to claw back within 54-52 on a free throw from sophomore Isaiah Eisendorf (Los Angeles, Calif./Springbrook, Md.) with 1:24 showing on the clock.
  • The deficit was still at two (58-56) following junior Emmanuel Matey's (Lanham, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) lay-up with two seconds left. The Golden Knights then stole the inbound pass, but were called for a foul.
  • Clancy proceeded to hit both free throws to ice a 60-56 victory.
