GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • California (Pa.) ignited the fire immediately, matching 70 yards on nine plays during the opening drive. The scoring drive culminated with a three-yard touchdown pass from James Harris to Garry Brown 3:58 into the contest.
  • The visitors took over at the Gannon 31-yard line midway through the first quarter after an interception. The Vulcans then needed only four plays to increase the lead to 14-0.
  • It was the start of touchdowns on three consecutive drives for Cal. The Vulcans moved their lead to 28-0 after an 89-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Kowan Scott and 10-yard touchdown run by John Franklin III.
  • Cal grabbed its biggest lead of the afternoon at 35-0 after an eight-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Harris scoring on a 10-yard run at the 3:26 mark of the second quarter.
  • Gannon finally got on the board late in the first half. The Golden Knights assumed great field position at their 47-yard line following a three-yard punt.
  • Nine plays and three third-down conversions later, the Golden Knights reached the end zone on a 10-yard screen pass with 17 seconds left from redshirt freshman Zach Phillips (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) to senior Brock Jones (Peninsula, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) who made an athletic move to stay inbounds. The extra point cut the deficit to 35-7 at the half.
  • Gannon continued the momentum by drawing first blood in the second half. Aided by two Cal personal fouls called on the same play when it was fourth-and-nine, the Golden Knights drove 68 yards in six plays. Jones accounted for the final four yards, bringing Gannon within 35-14 at the 9:28 mark of the third quarter.
  • Neither team was able to score again until Cal produced its final points 49 seconds into the fourth quarter. Jimmy Wheeler opened the last quarter with three rushes for 49 yards. The final play finished in the end zone from 11 yards out for a 42-14 lead.
  • An interception by sophomore Foster Reznor (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) set up Gannon's final points. Phillips proceeded to complete five consecutive passes, including a 40-yard pick-up on a screen pass to Jones. He then hit redshirt senior Jesstin Hamm (Harwood, Md./DeMatha Catholic) on a quick slant from three yards out with 2:03 remaining to account for the final 42-21 score.
