GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Indiana (Pa.) jumped on Gannon early with a pair of touchdowns during its first two possessions. Both came after the Golden Knights went three-and-out.
  • The first scoring drive went 62 yards on 10 plays, ending with a Chris Temple one-yard touchdown plunge.
  • On the first play of its next possession, IUP converted a 54-yard touchdown connection between Lenny Williams and Walt Pegues for a 14-0 lead 8:19 into the game.
  • IUP later used an interception at the Gannon 17-yard line to set up a 30-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter for a 17-0 lead.
  • The IUP defense stopped Gannon's next possession at the Crimson Hawks' 39-yard line with a sack on fourth-and-three. Nine plays later, IUP increased its lead to 20-0 on a 35-yard field goal with 9:26 left in the first half.
  • An ensuing 29-yard kickoff return by sophomore Brandon Mansell (New Brighton, Pa./Blackhawk) to the Gannon 48-yard line seemed to rejuvenate the Golden Knights.
  • Gannon went to the ground and ate up the remaining 52 yards with strictly running plays. The final one was a three-yard touchdown run by senior Brock Jones (Peninsula, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) that cut the deficit to 20-7 at the 7:30 mark of the second quarter.
  • The score remained the same until late in the third quarter. Gannon assumed the ball at IUP's 49-yard line following a 27-yard punt. On third-and-nine, redshirt freshman Zach Phillips (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) scrambled out of the pocket and hit redshirt sophomore Brendan Klemensic (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) for a 48-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline. The quick strike cut the deficit to 20-14 with 1:39 left in the third quarter.
  • The first five possessions of a wild fourth quarter arguably decided the final outcome. Gannon initially fumbled a punt on its own 10-yard line, but IUP coughed it back up when Chris Temple fumbled on third-and-goal from the two-yard line.
  • Gannon followed with a three-and-out and gave up great field position following a 13-yard punt that was downed at the GU 24-yard line. The Crimson Hawks reached the Golden Knights' two-yard line, before the play that could have swung the momentum into Gannon's favor. IUP fumbled the snap and with a Gannon defender about to scoop up the ball with a clear path to the end zone, Temple was able to knock the ball loose and recover it. Despite all that, Gannon remained alive as IUP missed a 36-yard field goal on the next play.
  • After Gannon was unable to move the ball, IUP finally dealt the final blow. On third-and-two, Williams ripped off a 64-yard touchdown run with 4:35 to play.
  • IUP ended Gannon's next possession with an interception, before running out the clock.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest concluded the PSAC Western Division schedule.
  • Indiana (Pa.) is tabbed sixth in the NCAA Division II Super Region One rankings.
  • IUP held the upper hand in first downs (18-13), rushing yards (266-140), passing yards (124-85), total yards (390-225) and time of possession (30:48-27:50).
  • Phillips led Gannon in rushing with 58 yards. He gained 97 yards, but lost 39 yards on negative plays. The redshirt freshman finished 9-of-21 for 85 yards and one touchdown through the air.
  • Jones and redshirt junior Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East) added 43 and 39 rushing yards, respectively.
  • Redshirt senior Joshua Wiechelt (Depew, N.Y./Depew) led all tacklers on both sides with 13 stops, reaching double digits for the second consecutive game and sixth time this season.
  • Redshirt sophomore Nico Mendieta (San Ramon, Calif./California) tied a career-high last week with nine tackles against California (Pa.), before setting a new career-high with 11 stops at IUP.
  • Junior Mike Zanders (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) produced double-digit tackles for the second time this season with 10 stops.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • For the second time this season, Gannon has followed a three-game win streak with a two-game losing streak.
  • The Golden Knights finished fifth in the PSAC West with a 3-4 divisional mark.
  • Zanders moved into Gannon's all-time top 10 in tackles, finishing the game with 251 career stops.
  • Mendieta reached the 100-career tackle plateau during his second season.
  • Wiechelt cracked Gannon's all-time top 20 in tackles, jumping four players and moving into a tie for 16th place with Joe Dipre (2004-05) and Todd Proper (1996-99) with 216 career tackles.
  • Jones became the sixth Golden Knight to record 1,000 rushing yards in a season and the second to accomplish it twice. Sterling Pierce (1996-99) is the only other Gannon player to perform the feat twice, doing so in 1997 and 1998.
  • Gannon dropped its third consecutive contest played at George P. Miller Stadium after posting a 29-3 win during its first-ever trip in 2009.
  • Jones moved into a tie with Gannon Hall of Famer Darmel Whitfield (2001-04) for second place all-time with 210 career points. He needs two touchdowns during the regular-season finale to tie Jon Richardson's (2006-09) school record.
  • Wiechelt became the eighth Golden Knight in school history to record 100 tackles in a season. He can tie Pat Rodkey's single-season record (120 in 1996) with 15 tackles during next week's regular-season finale.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes the regular season Saturday, November 14 at East Stroudsburg.
  • Game time is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
  • It will be the Golden Knights' first trip to East Stroudsburg since their first year as a member of the PSAC in 2008.
