Gannon Men's Soccer Team Concludes Opening Weekend with Setback at No. 16 Notre Dame (Ohio)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: at No. 16 Notre Dame (Ohio) 3, Gannon 1
  • Records: Gannon (0-2), Notre Dame (Ohio) (1-1)
  • Location: South Euclid, Ohio – Mueller Field
  • The Short Story: Notre Dame (Ohio) snapped a scoreless tie with two goals 54 seconds apart midway through the second half en route to a 3-1 victory against Gannon Sunday afternoon. The Falcons were ranked 16th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason national rankings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame (Ohio) forged ahead 2-0 on back-to-back unassisted goals by Felipe Silva and Julian Giannotti at the 63:16 and 64:10 marks.
  • Gannon stopped the momentum shortly thereafter as redshirt junior Gavin Linsell scored unassisted off a direct kick in the 70th minute. It represented the first goal of the season for both Linsell and the team.
  • Notre Dame (Ohio) iced the victory with an insurance goal from Martin Lange with 9:29 remaining. Adam Mitchell assisted on the play.

GAME NOTES
  • The match featured six yellow cards, including four that were issued to the Golden Knights. Gannon played the final 30:01 down a player after redshirt junior Skhosi Mgobozi received his second yellow card.
  • Notre Dame (Ohio) out-shot Gannon 19-8, including a 9-2 advantage during a scoreless first half.
  • The Falcons also held a large 13-5 edge in corner kicks. They had six during the first half compared to Gannon's zero.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is in the midst of a season-opening four-match road swing. The Golden Knights haven't opened a campaign with four straight road affairs since 1989. However, three of those four contests were on neutral fields.
  • Head coach Rob van Rheenen's club has opened the season with consecutive losses for the second straight season. The Golden Knights rebounded last year with a 3-0 shutout at East Stroudsburg during the third match of the season.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon has five days off before continuing its four-match road swing Saturday, September 13 at Alderson Broaddus. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The string of road matches concludes Tuesday, September 16 at Daemen (N.Y.).
