Gannon Men's Soccer Team Captures First Win on Peterson's First Career Goal in Double Overtime

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 3, at Alderson Broaddus 2 (2 ot)
  • Records: Gannon (1-2), Alderson Broaddus (0-4)
  • Location: Philippi, W.Va. – Multi-Sport Performance Stadium
  • The Short Story: Junior Chad Petterson's (Westville, South Africa/Westville Boys) first career goal in the 104th minute propelled Gannon to a 3-2 double-overtime victory Saturday night at Alderson Broaddus. The Golden Knights received game-tying goals from senior Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa/St. Benedict School) twice to help earn their first win of the season.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, Alderson Broaddus scored 6:49 into the second half. But Bennett responded in the 72nd minute, scoring off an assist from Petterson into the lower right corner of the goal. The assist was Peterson's first career helper.
  • That same sequence replayed itself later in the half. Alderson Broaddus regained the lead at the 78:32 mark, but Bennett tallied the game-tying goal 1:12 later off an assist from redshirt junior Gavin Linsell (Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edward VII).
  • Petterson scored the game-winner in the 104th minute of double overtime on a put back into an open net. The goal was left open when the goalkeeper never recovered after Bennett's initial shot hit the post. It was Petterson's first career goal.

GAME NOTES
  • The match featured four yellow cards and a red card during the first half.
  • Gannon played all but the first 5:57 down a man after freshman Ivan Viveros (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) received a red card in the sixth minute.
  • The contest was dead even in the statistical categories. Both teams took 16 shots. Alderson Broaddus had a slight edge in corner kicks (8-7) and fouls (8-6).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is in the midst of a season-opening four-match road swing. The Golden Knights haven't opened a campaign with four straight road affairs since 1989. However, three of those four contests were on neutral fields.
  • Head coach Rob van Rheenen's club has opened the last two seasons with consecutive losses. The Golden Knights rebounded with a victory in the third match both times. Last year, Gannon answered with a 3-0 shutout at East Stroudsburg.
  • Saturday night's contest was Gannon's first double-overtime affair since a 3-2 loss to Shippensburg on September 28, 2013.
  • It was Gannon's first double-overtime victory since a 2-1 decision at Shippensburg on October 20, 2012.
  • Bennett jumped assistant coach Dan Howell (2005-09) and into ninth place all-time at Gannon with his 38th career goal. He also jumped John Treschel (1987-90) and into 11th place all-time at Gannon with his 89th career point.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes its season-opening four-match road swing Tuesday, September 16 at Daemen. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, September 19 against East Stroudsburg at 4:30 p.m.
