Gannon Men's Soccer Team Concludes Opening Road Trip with Setback at Daemen

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: at Daemen 3, Gannon 1
  • Records: Gannon (1-3), Daemen (2-2)

  • The Short Story: Gannon out-shot Daemen 23-12, but it was the Wildcats that pulled off the 3-1 victory. Daemen snapped a 1-1 tie with 3:54 left in the first half en route to its first-ever victory against the Golden Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daemen struck early, scoring on its second shot of the contest 2:03 into the affair. Cole Beale flicked a ball past the goalkeeper from the right wing.
  • Junior Chad Petterson (Westville, South Africa/Westville Boys) tied the contest in the 12th minute. He headed a ball from redshirt junior Skhosi Mgobozi (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. David's Marist Inanda) into the net from the middle of the box.
  • Cole Beale had the backbreaking score, netting his second goal of the match with 3:54 left in the first half. The tally pushed the Wildcats ahead 2-1.
  • Alex Reid added an insurance goal in the 64th minute. He took a pass from Caleb Holmes and carried the ball into the box, before drilling a hard shot inside the left post.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon controlled the play despite the loss. The Golden Knights out-shot Daemen 23-12, including a 12-5 edge during the second half. Gannon took five of the contest's final six shots over the last 12 minutes.
  • Daemen goalkeeper Matt Daddario turned away almost every Gannon opportunity with 10 saves.
  • Senior Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa/St. Benedict School) took a match-high eight shots. Peterson was next with six attempts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon concluded a season-opening four-match road swing with a 1-3 record. The Golden Knights haven't opened a campaign with four straight road affairs since 1989. However, three of those four contests were on neutral fields.
  • One match after scoring his first career goal, Peterson scored his second goal of the season.
  • Daemen defeated Gannon for first time in four all-time meetings.
  • Gannon and Daemen were meeting for the first time since 1983.
