Gannon Women’s Water Polo Falls to No. 4 Chapman and California Baptist to Open California Convergence Tournament

Senior Kelsey Rzymek scored three total goals to open the California Convergence Tournament Friday
CLAREMONT, Fla. - The Gannon women's water polo team opened the California Convergence Tournament Friday at the Axelrood Pool. Snapping a four-match win streak, the Lady Knights dropped a 13-11 loss to the No. 4 Chapman Panthers before falling to the California Baptist Lancers by the score of 19-7. The Lady Knights moved to 5-4 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 4-4 and the Lancers jumped to 9-8.

In the opening game, the Lady Knights faced fourth nationally-ranked Division III Chapman. The Panthers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. Before the end of the half, the Panthers doubled up on the Lady Knights, 6-3. The Lady Knights and Panthers each tallied four goals in the third quarter to put the score at 10-7. To conclude the match, the Lady Knights outscored the Panthers in the fourth quarter, but fell short of a rally, 13-11.

Senior Kateyln Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) led the Lady Knights with three goals. Senior Tricia Gajewski (Fairview, Pa./Fairview), sophomore Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and senior Kelsey Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each tallied two goals. Tacking on a goal each were sophomore Rachel Bednarek (Windmere, Fla./Olympia) and junior Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West).

Freshman Emily Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) collected eight blocks in the loss.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Knights battled California Baptist, who received votes in the latest Varsity Top 20 Poll. The Lancers stormed out to a 7-1 advantage by the conclusion of the first quarter. At the half, the Lancers extended their lead to 12-4. Returning from the break, the Lancers held the Lady Knights scoreless and added a pair of goals. To conclude the match, the Lancers sealed the victory with five tallies for a 19-7 win over the Lady Knights.

Senior Bailey Gadd (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) led the Lady Knights' offense with two goals. Junior Adelee Choban (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny),  Jacobs, Lazenby, Rzymek and McDaniels each added a goal.

Rodriguez registered five blocks to move to 5-4 on the season.

Jacobs compiled five steals on the day to move into sole possession of fifth place on the program's all-time steals list (164).

Gannon concludes the California Convergence Tournament Saturday with a pair of matches. The Lady Knights face the University of La Verne at 2:40 p.m. EST followed by the University of Redlands at 8 p.m. EST. In the latest Division III Poll released March 5, Redlands is ranked sixth, while La Verne occupies eighth.
