Gannon Men's Water Polo Team Drops Two on Final Day of California Trip

  • The Short Story: LeVerne broke opened a close match with a 6-3 scoring edge during the third quarter en route to a 17-13 victory against Gannon Saturday afternoon at the Gary Troyer Invitational. Sophomore Marko Sadikovic (Stara Zeleznicka Konlonija, Yugoslavia/Gimnazije) led the Golden Knights with four goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon initially held a lead of 1-0 after Sadikovic's first score 1:47 into the contest.
  • LeVerne turned the tables to assume a 4-2 lead, before Gannon ended the first quarter with three consecutive goals. A pair of Sadikovic goals sandwiched a Michael Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) score during the final three minutes. The final flurry gave the Golden Knights a 5-4 lead after one quarter.
  • Gannon extended its lead to 7-4 after senior Raz Yuval (Kibbutz Yagur, Israel/Carmel Zvulun) and junior Adam Wolf (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) opened the second quarter with goals.
  • After three LeVerne goals tied the match at seven, the two teams traded scores to remain deadlocked at eight. But another LeVerne tally with five seconds left gave Leopards a 9-8 halftime lead.
  • Leading 11-10, LeVerne ripped off four of the last five third-quarter goals for a 15-11 lead. In all, the Leopards out-scored the Golden Knights 6-3 during the third stanza.
  • Gannon and LeVerne split four goals during the final quarter to account for the final 17-13 score.

  • Records: Gannon (2-5), Chapman (7-7)
  • The Short Story: Chapman overcame a 5-3 deficit after one quarter with scoring advantages during the final three quarters to post a 17-12 victory against Gannon. The contest was the Golden Knights' final one during their stay at the Gary Troyer Invitational.

  • Gannon jumped out to a 5-3 lead after one quarter.

  • The Golden Knights entered the final quarter trailing 15-11 after being out-scored 5-2 during the third stanza.
  • Chapman concluded the match with two of the final quarter's three goals.

  • Gannon has two weeks off to prepare for the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division II Championships hosted Saturday, October 18 at the Gannon Recreation and Wellness Center. 
  • The Golden Knights open play against Salem International at 11 a.m. Mercyhurst will then battle Salem International at 3 p.m., before Gannon and Mercyhurst conclude the day at 7 p.m.
