Gannon Men's Soccer Team Opens Weekend Road Trip with 3-2 Overtime Victory at Millersville

  • The Short Story: Senior Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa/St. Benedict School) scored his second unassisted goal of the contest 4:26 into extra time, giving the Gannon men's soccer team a 3-2 overtime victory Friday night at Millersville. The Golden Knights are 4-0-1 during their last five overtime matches on the road dating back to the 2011 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bennett opened the scoring 3:25 into the match, scoring unassisted on the first shot by either team. The senior forward got into open space, before beating the goalkeeper one-on-one.
  • Millersville responded with a pair of goals during the span of 11 minutes and 58 seconds. Shaun Daly tied the match in the eighth minute, hitting a shot off Gannon goalkeeper Matthew Dixon (Durban, South Africa/Westville Boys) and into the net.
  • Zach Brier pushed the Marauders ahead in the 20th minute, beating Dixon one-on-one after receiving a pass from Jesse Zimmerman.
  • After trailing 2-1 at halftime, Gannon evened the score 9:53 into the second half. Redshirt sophomore Jason Fox (Southport, Australia/The Southport School) beat a diving Millersville goalkeeper to draw even. Freshman Alejandro Ferrero (Caspe, Spain/I.E.S. Mar de Aragon) was credited with the assist on the play.
  • Gannon controlled the short time of play in overtime. Redshirt junior Gavin Linsell (Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edward VII) had a scoring attempt denied 1:18 into the overtime. Bennett then scored the game-winner shortly thereafter in the 95th minute.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon out-shot Millersville 26-14, including a 12-6 edge during the first half.
  • Fox's game-tying score represented his first career goal. Meanwhile, Ferrero picked up his first career assist on the play.
  • Dixon had a season-high seven saves with an even three during the first half and four in the second half.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon moved to 2-0 in overtime matches this season. The Golden Knights have won four straight road overtime matches dating back to the 2012 season. The squad is unbeaten (4-0-1) during its last five road overtime matches dating back to 2011.
  • Bennett's opening score was his 40th career goal. His game-winner moved him past Mike Rugh (1996-99) and into eighth place all-time at Gannon with 41 career goals.
  • Bennett's four points moved him out of a tie with current assistant coach Colin Petersen (1993-96) on Gannon's all-time chart for career points, giving him sole possession of 10th place with 96 career points.
  • Gannon and Millersville went to overtime for the second consecutive match-up. The Marauders posted a 2-1 double-overtime win last season in Erie, Pa.
