THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Davis & Elkins 4, at Gannon 1
  • Records: Gannon (5-10-1), Davis & Elkins (8-7-1)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Gannon University Field
  • The Short Story: Senior Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa/St. Benedict School) scored his 47th career goal in the 23rd minute, before Davis & Elkins rattled off four unanswered scores to post a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon in a men's soccer non-conference match at Gannon University Field.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon drew first blood on Bennett's 11th goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Redshirt senior Tyron Springer (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. David's Marist Inanda) headed freshman Warrick Bourke's (Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edward VII) throw-in from the left side to Bennett, who finished the picture-perfect scoring play with a header into the right side of the net.
  • Davis & Elkins almost tied the contest at the 36:57 mark when it caught the Gannon keeper out of the goal, but a centering pass was knocked away. However, the play led to a Gannon foul. James Pucci then drilled a direct kick into the upper, left corner from 30 yards out on the right side to tie the score with 4:48 left in the first half.
  • The visiting Senators shut out the Golden Knights 3-0 during the second half. Davis & Elkins took a 2-1 lead on its first shot of the second half. Simon Hestad took a short pass from Fredrik Hedemark and scored into the left side 3:29 into the final stanza, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
  • Davis & Elkins quickly added another goal off the foot of Hedemark two minutes and 52 seconds later, extending the lead to 3-1.
  • Hested's insurance goal with 3:58 remaining put the match on ice. The final score came off a rebound from Pucci's initial shot.

GAME NOTES
  • Trailing 3-1, freshman Manuel Mangu (Maple Ridge, British Columbia/Garibaldi Secondary School) kept Davis & Elkins at bay with back-to-back saves on point-blank shots in the 57th minute.
  • Gannon had a couple above-average scoring opportunities during the second half. The Golden Knights sent an open shot off a crossing pass wide in the 58th minute.
  • Davis & Elkins keeper Daniel Nock stopped a good look from redshirt sophomore Connor Pletz (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) 11 minutes later.
  • Bourke's assist on the first goal represented his first career helper.
  • Davis & Elkins was making its first appearance at Gannon University Field since a 2-1 setback in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on November 11, 2012.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bennett moved past Dag Magnusson (1993-96) and into sixth place on Gannon's all-time scoring list with his 111th career point. His 47 career goals also rank sixth all-time at Gannon.
  • Gannon concluded its non-conference schedule Wednesday afternoon, finishing 1-4 against non-PSAC opponents.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes the regular season Saturday, November 1 against rival Mercyhurst at Gannon University Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. Gannon will be honored seniors Bennett, Ryan Mershimer (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), Alex Perri (Valencia, Pa./Mars) and Springer during pre-match festivities as part of Senior Day.
