ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's basketball team returns to Erie, Pa., for the first time in 20 days Wednesday, January 8 when it hosts Cheyney at
Penn State Behrend's Junker Center. The final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game of the season is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live locally on Jet Radio 1400.
Please note the venue change to Penn State Behrend's Junker Center as crews continue work at the Hammermill Center to repair the damage caused by a fire on December 23.
ADMISSION WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis since the Junker Center has only one category of seats. This will apply to all patrons, including Gannon season-ticket holders. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. as Wednesday's contest will be part of a PSAC crossover doubleheader that begins with the women's teams at 5:30 p.m.
Gannon (6-7, 2-2 PSAC West) looks to snap a season-high three-game losing streak during its final PSAC crossover game. Two of those three losses have come by three points or less. The streak started with a 67-64 overtime defeat at Bloomsburg and concluded with a last-second 73-72 setback at West Chester last Saturday. The Golden Knights are 5-3 at home and 1-4 on the road. Wednesday's contest will be the first neutral-site match-up of the season.
Head coach
John T. Reilly's club has won 17 of its 25 crossover games during the last five seasons and has compiled a 21-12 crossover record since joining the league prior to the 2008-09 academic year.
According to the numbers, Gannon needs to have a good first half to be successful. The Golden Knights are 6-2 when leading or tied at halftime. The squad is 0-5 when trailing at the intermission.
Gannon has out-rebounded all 13 opponents this season, including 10 by double digits. The Golden Knights rank second among PSAC teams and fourth nationally with a plus-12.2 rebounding margin. The squad is second among PSAC teams and 14th among all NCAA Division II programs in free throw percentage (77.5). Gannon is third among conference teams and 10th nationally in scoring defense (63.2).
Cheyney (2-11, 2-2 PSAC East) rides a season-high five-game losing streak into Wednesday's contest. The Wolves are winless in six road games this season and have dropped their last seven games against PSAC West opponents dating back to last season. However, the PSAC Eastern Division club has one of the league's most dangerous players in Deshawn Curtis who leads the conference in scoring with 21.8 points per game.
Gannon has won 10 of its last 11 games against Cheyney and leads the all-time series 16-11. The Golden Knights have won nine consecutive games against the Wolves at the Hammermill Center, but Wednesday's contest will be the first between the two clubs played on a neutral floor. The all-time series includes three postseason games. The last playoff match-up resulted in a 69-50 Gannon victory during the 2009 PSAC Semifinals at the Hammermill Center.
