ANAPOLIS, Md. - The Gannon men's water polo team wrapped up action at the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament with a pair of losses Sunday. The Golden Knights came up short 21-5 against Johns Hopkins and 18-6 against George Washington.
Gannon fell behind quickly during the first match of the day against Johns Hopkins, trailing 8-1 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw Johns Hopkins outscore Gannon 7-1, leaving the Golden Knights down 15-2 at the break.
Johns Hopkins won the third quarter by a 5-2 score before each team netted one goal in the fourth quarter to finish the match.Â
The Golden Knights were led in scoring by
Daisuke Takagi, who netted three of Gannon's five scores.
Kyle Lazenby and
Adam Wolf added added the other two goals.
In the second match, Gannon suffered an 18-6 loss to George Washington. The Golden Knights again struggled in the first quarter as George Washington built a 7-1 lead. After a 5-2 scoring edge in the second, the Golden Knights trailed 12-3 at the break.
Gannon was shut out in the third quarter, but managed to tally three scores in the fourth to account for the 18-6 final. Five different Golden Knights scored in the match led by
Cody Sherman's two goals. Takagi, Lazenby, Wolf and
Nathan Bean each accounted for one score. Goalie
Neal Zoellick tallied six and seven saves respectively in the two contests.
Gannon returns to the pool Friday, September 7 when they face Mercyhurst on the road. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
