Gannon enters Tuesday's non-conference affair red hot after sweeping a four-game series against Clarion last weekend. As a result, the Golden Knights improved to 14-10 overall and moved into first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with a 6-2 conference slate.
Head coach
Nate Cocolin's club produced its first four-game sweep since taking all four games against Clarion April 2-3, 2010. As a result, the Golden Knights are off to a 6-2 start in conference play for the first time since 2010 and have a five-game winning streak for the first time since being victorious in six consecutive games March 28-April 3, 2010.
The latest four-game sweep of Clarion came mostly on the heels of offensive firepower. Gannon scored 47 runs and pounded out 52 hits during the four-game series. It marked the first time since at least 1999 the Golden Knights scored 47 runs during a four-game series and scored 20 runs in a game twice during the same season.
Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) was almost unstoppable last weekend, reaching base 14 times in 17 plate appearances against Clarion. The senior shortstop leads Gannon with a .382 batting average through 24 games.
Six different Golden Knights are hitting .300 or better.
Evan Baglieri (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Michael's) is hitting .375 with a PSAC-leading 11 doubles, 14 runs, three home runs and 28 RBIs.
Michael Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) has a .342 average with 20 runs, six doubles, four triples, four home runs and 26 RBIs. Tomko now has nine career triples, needing one more to tie the school record set by Loren Marz (1970-73).
The Gannon pitching staff continues to excel with a 3.99 team earned run average. Seven Golden Knights have ERAs under 4.00 and three have 1.88 ERAs or lower.
David Spaeder (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and
Matt Tobin (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) have the lowest marks among pitchers with at least 14 innings pitched with 1.84 and 1.88 ERAs.
Paul McKenna (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge) leads the team in victories with a 5-1 record.
Alderson-Broaddus enters Tuesday's doubleheader with a 6-15 overall record, going 4-5 during its last nine games. The Battlers dropped both ends of a doubleheader at 17th-ranked Seton Hill last Friday, before rebounding with a 6-3 nine-inning victory yesterday.
Mitch Roy leads four Alderson-Broaddus .300 hitters with a .354 average. The senior outfielder also tops the team in runs (17), hits (28) and doubles (7). Sophomore Kirby Clemens is second with a .353 average. Senior Mike Hackett and junior Sean Collette complete the group with .324 and .311 averages, respectively.
Junior Bobby Williams has been A-B's best pitcher, owning a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA and .220 opponent batting average during 11 innings of work. Freshman Jacob Hinton is 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA in 12 2/3 innings.
Gannon and Alderson-Broaddus split a doubleheader last season in Philippi, West Virginia. The Battlers won the first game 5-4, before the Golden Knights earned the split with a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.
