Gannon enters the road affair with a 2-1 record after winning two of three games last weekend at the prestigious Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, California. The Lady Knights defeated eighth-ranked UC San Diego 69-58, before falling to top-ranked Ashland 70-59. The squad also produced a 55-44 victory against West Texas A&M, which was among others receiving votes in the USA Today Sports/ESPN Preseason Coaches Poll.
Head coach
Cleve Wright's club received balanced scoring during its opening tournament. Six Lady Knights averaged at least 7.3 points per game.
Nettie Blake (Jersey City, N.J./Marist) led the way with 10.3 points and seven rebounds per game.
Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) averaged 10 points, 3.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds.
Gannon received plenty of attention during the preseason. The Lady Knights were picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division according to the league's preseason coaches poll. The squad was also tabbed 14th in the Division II Bulletin and 15th in the USA Today Sports/ESPN preseason national polls. Gannon went 2-0 against NCAA Division I schools during the preseason, winning road games at Kent State (70-61) and the University of Buffalo (63-53).
Friday's contest will be Seton Hill's 2012-13 home opener. The Griffins opened the campaign Tuesday night with a 67-61 loss at Lake Erie. The squad rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit only to see the Storm score eight of the game's final 11 points. Junior forward Katie Gattuso posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Paige Alviani added 16 points. Redshirt freshman guard Kelly Brennan was the third Griffin in double figures with 11.
Seton Hill, picked to finish ninth in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) preseason coaches poll, is in its last season as a member of the WVIAC. The Griffins will become a full-fledged member of the PSAC in 2013-14.
The Greensburg, Pa., club finished 11-18 overall and 10-12 in the WVIAC last season. Gannon fans will remember Seton Hill from the 2010 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. The Griffins went 23-8 during the 2009-10 season, before falling to Gannon 80-60 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament held at the Hammermill Center. It remains the only meeting ever between the two schools. The Lady Knights won the regional that season and later advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four.
