ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Gannon men's water polo team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament. The Golden Knights fell to Navy by a 24-3 score and then dropped a 21-6 decision to Bucknell.
Gannon fell behind early in the season opener as Navy tallied nine scores in the first quarter. The Golden Knights netted one goal in the second quarter but faced a 16-1 deficit at the half.
In the third quarter, Navy extended their lead by outscoring Gannon 3-0. Gannon added two goals in the final quarter, but Navy added five more to earn the 24-3 win.
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki), Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and Kyle Lazenby (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) all scored once for the Golden Knights. Goalie Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had nine blocks in the match.
In the second match, Bucknell scored first, holding a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. The Bison exploded for seven goals in the second quarter, while the Golden Knights managed just two.
After trailing 10-2 at the half, Gannon added two more goals in the third quarter. The Bison netted five goals in the third quarter and six in the fourth quarter to win by a 21-6 final.
Takagi had three of Gannon's six goals, with Lazenby Jake Ouellette (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and Ben Feasley (Takoma Park, Md. / Montgomery Blair) all adding one. Zoellick had blocks in goal for the Golden Knights.
Head coach Don Sherman's squad falls to 0-2 on the season. Gannon will play two more matches at the U.S Naval Tournament Sunday. The Golden Knights will take on MAB at 11 a.m. and Diablo Valley at 3:40
