Gannon Men's Basketball Team Steam Rolls Clarion in Regular-Season Finale

Senior Travis Brannen capped his collegiate career with his 10th career double-double on Senior Night, recording 24 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
ERIE, Pa. - Senior Travis Brannen (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) recorded his 10th career double-double with 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as the Gannon men's basketball team steam rolled Clarion 81-68 Saturday on Senior Night at the Hammermill Center.

Gannon raced out to a commanding 50-33 halftime lead after shooting 65.5 percent (19-29) from the floor and 75 percent (6-8) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes. The Golden Knights doubled up the Golden Eagles in the first seven minutes and 14 seconds, producing a 24-12 advantage. The home team converted its first three shots and 14 of its first 17.

Danard Crouch's (Syracuse, N.Y./Anthony Henninger) three-pointer with 7:53 showing on the clock pushed the Gannon lead to 39-19. Moments later, Brannen capped a 15-4 run with a tip-in at the 6:19 mark, giving the Golden Knights their biggest lead of the first half at 42-19. Clarion did end the half by scoring 12 of the last 20 points and went to the intermission with a 17-point deficit.

Gannon maintained a lead between 13 and 19 points for the first nine minutes of the second half. A 14-2 run midway through the second half allowed the Golden Knights to grab their largest lead of the evening at 75-50 with 7:32 remaining.

Steve Piotrowicz (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored five points during the run that was capped by senior Kareem Brown's (New London, Conn./New London) three-pointer from the right wing.

Clarion answered with a 15-2 blitz over the next five minutes and 28 seconds, cutting the deficit to 77-65 with 2:04 to play. However, the Golden Eagles were never able to get any closer as Gannon celebrated an 81-68 victory in the regular-season finale.

Brannen led all scorers with 24 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high five blocks. The senior forward was 9-of-13 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

Stephen Battle (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) had 16 points and seven rebounds. Anthony Claggett (Mount Rainier, Md./Friendship Collegiate Academy) chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and five assists off the bench. Tanner Furno (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) completed the double-digit scorers with 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds.

Crouch finished his collegiate career with eight points and four assists. Brown concluded his career with a pair of three-pointers in eight minutes off the bench.

Gannon shot 59.6 percent (31-52) from the floor, 56.3 percent (9-16) from behind the arc and 52.6 percent (10-19) from the charity stripe. The team's shooting percentage was its best since hitting 60.7 percent (37-61) of its shots during an 89-75 victory against Edinboro on March 3, 2009.

Lloyd Harrison led the Clarion attack with 24 points and six steals. Jamar Harrison added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Clarion shot 30.8 percent (24-78) from the field, 28 percent (7-25) from three-point range and 72.2 percent (13-18) from the free throw line.

Gannon concluded its season at 15-11 overall and 6-8 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division, defeating Clarion for the 12th consecutive time at the Hammermill Center and sweeping the Golden Eagles for the second time in three seasons. Clarion ended its campaign at 15-11 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
