The Gannon men's basketball team concludes the road portion of its regular season Saturday, February 19 at California (Pa.). The critical Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Gannon improved to 13-10 overall and 4-7 in the PSAC Western Division with an impressive 79-71 victory at rival Mercyhurst Wednesday night, handing the Lakers their first conference loss of the season. The Golden Knights are one game behind California (Pa.) and Clarion for the final playoff spot with three games to play. However, Saturday's game will be a must-win for the squad since a loss would put it two games behind the Vulcans with two contest left. Plus, a loss would give California (Pa.) the tiebreaker advantage based on a head-to-head sweep, so only a multiple-team tie could possibly keep the Golden Knights' playoff hopes alive with a loss.
California (Pa.) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 69-68 victory against Slippery Rock Wednesday night. The Vulcans are 8-5 at home this season and 3-6 on the road. Saturday's contest will be the last regular-season game ever at Hamer Hall as the Vulcans are scheduled to move into a new arena next season.
Gannon leads the all-time series against California (Pa.) 10-7, but the Golden Knights have struggled at Hamer Hall. Gannon is 1-5 all-time on Cal's home floor and earned its only victory there during the 1954-55 season by an 86-71 count. The Golden Knight have lost both games played at Hamer Hall since joining the league, falling 62-55 in 2008-09 and 59-56 in 2009-10.
