ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's and men's swimming and diving teams look to continue a successful season-opening homestand Saturday, November 5 when they host California (Pa.) and Le Moyne at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The tri-meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Gannon women's team brings a 2-1 dual record into the weekend after sweeping Assumption (Mass.) (84-38) and Lake Erie (113-9) last Saturday at the CAP. The Lady Knights dominated the meet, winning 11 of the 16 events. The squad has produced 13 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times during its first two meets this season.
Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) was a quadruple-winner last Saturday. The true freshman won a pair of individual events with PSAC-qualifying times in the 50-yard freestyle (24.98) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.77). She was also part of Gannon's winning relay teams in the 400-yard medley (4:08.57) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.60).
Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and
Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) were both triple-winners. Vincent took home gold in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.76) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.09). Both times met conference standards. She also participated on the winning 400-yard medley relay team.
Fischl raised her hand victorious with PSAC-qualifying times in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.39) and the 200-yard IM (2:14.29). The true freshman then completed her day with a title on the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
California (Pa.) opened the 2011-12 season by finishing first out of four teams at the Lock Haven Invitational November 21-22. Senior Melissa Gates won a combined six events (four relay) at the season-opening event. The defending-NCAA National Champion in the 50-yard freestyle, she won the event by nearly nine-tenths of a second with a meet- and pool-record time of 23.40 seconds. Gates also captured the win in the 100-yard freestyle after touching the wall in a meet- and pool-record time of 51.49 seconds, which was over three seconds faster than the rest of the field. Her times in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle reached the NCAA Championships 'B' qualifying standards.
Le Moyne has two events under its belt, finishing sixth out of seven teams at the New England Catholic Invitational hosted by Boston College and suffering a 153-132 dual-meet loss to Bentley last Saturday.
Senior Katie O'Donnell won three individual events against Bentley. O'Donnell, who registered three of Le Moyne's four individual swimming victories, picked up the team's first win of the day in the 100-yard backstroke. She turned in a time of 58.79 seconds to break her own pool record set on November 22, 2008. She later registered a time of 58.44 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly to break the pool record set by Allison Lesher on February 8, 2008. O'Donnell turned in her third pool-record performance of the day in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.87 to break the mark of 2:10.64 set by RIT's Caitlyn Burr on January 24, 2009.
The Gannon men's swimming and diving team will only battle Le Moyne as California (Pa.) does not field a men's program. Gannon has been perfect in the early portion of the schedule. The Golden Knights sandwiched a first-place finish at the Westminster (Pa.) Relay Meet with dual-meet victories against Indiana (Pa.) (118-87) and Lake Erie (140-100).
Gannon needed only six victories to claim a 40-point victory against Lake Erie last Saturday due to multiple top-three finishes. The Golden Knights recorded six PSAC-qualifying times in the process.
Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African College) and Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led the way as double-winners. Dovale posted both wins during individual events, being the best in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.53) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.19). His 200-yard butterfly time met conference standards.
Chrzanowski took home first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a PSAC-qualifying time of 10 minutes and 10.28 seconds, before helping the 200-yard freestyle relay team win in one minute and 32.30 seconds. The true freshman also posted a conference-qualifying time of 4:50.56 during a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
Le Moyne began the season by finishing fourth out of five teams at the New England Catholic Invitational hosted by Boston College, before losing a dual meet against Bentley 161-119.
Junior Scott Thieke picked up three of Le Moyne's seven individual wins against Bentley. In the first individual event of the day, Thieke won the 1,000-yard freestyle by over 11 seconds with a time of 10:39.53. In the 500-yard freestyle, he touched the wall in 5:07.94, while closing out the individual portion of the meet with a time of 2:09.55 in the 200-yard IM.
Sophomore Tyler Olson was also part of three victories. Individually, he won the 200-yard freestyle by posting a time of 1:51.07 and the 100-yard freestyle in 49.55 seconds. He opened the meet by swimming the anchor leg of the victorious 200-yard medley relay team.
