Gannon Swimming and Diving Teams Host Tri-Meet Saturday Afternoon at the CAP

The Gannon swimming and diving teams will compete in front of the home crowd again Saturday afternoon.
ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's and men's swimming and diving teams will conclude a busy weekend Saturday, October 29 with a home tri-meet against Assumption (Mass.) and Lake Erie at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The event is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Both Gannon swim teams will first participate in the Westminster (Pa.) Relay Meet tonight (October 28) at 6 p.m. Gannon is the two-time defending champion in both the women's and men's competitions.

The Gannon women's team opened the 2011-12 campaign with a 115-103 setback to Indiana (Pa.) last Friday. Diana Rocco (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) was a double-winner in the diving events. The senior captured first place in the one-meter dive (230.50), before later winning the three-meter dive (244.95).

Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) and Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio / McDonald) both won an individual race and helped Gannon win the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Bosy took home first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.30 seconds. Joseph was the first to touch the wall in the 200-yard freestyle with a PSAC-qualifying time of one minute and 1:57.49 seconds. The duo then joined Jacqueline Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in three minutes and 39.92 seconds. Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) rounded out Gannon's opening-night champions by out-racing the field in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Assumption kicked off the season with a 3-3 record at the New England Catholic Invitational hosted by Boston College last weekend. The weekend included the program's first-ever victory against Holy Cross. The Greyhounds placed a number of athletes among the top five in numerous events, including a victory in the 100-yard butterfly for freshman Katherine Medeiros. She captured the event in a time of 1:01.39, outdistancing Kaela Bjornberg of Siena by .29 seconds.

As a team, Assumption registered victories over Holy Cross (193-147), Le Moyne (202.50-129.50) and Regis (260-41), while falling to Division I foes Boston College, Iona and Siena.

Lake Erie brings an 0-2 record into the weekend. The Storm began the season with losses at Urbana (91-64) and Findlay (101-31). Sophomore Lauren Menicucci won the 200-yard IM (2:18.39), the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.53) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.27) against Urbana. Fellow sophomore Casey Wendall took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:31.73), the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.25) and the 500-yard freestyle. Wendall's 100-yard freestyle broke her own LEC record.

The Gannon men's team will only entertain Lake Erie on Saturday since Assumption does not field a men's program. Gannon posted a 118-87 victory against Indiana (Pa.) during its season-opener last Friday.

Freshmen Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) were both triple-winners during their first collegiate action. In addition to a 200-yard freestyle victory (1:45.52), Chrzanowski finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of four minutes and 54.64 seconds and swam the third leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.34).

In addition to his 50-yard freestyle gold medal (21.99), Wolhaupter won the 100-yard freestyle with a PSAC-qualifying time of 48.11 seconds. He also swam the final leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay.

Lake Erie is looking for its first victory after consecutive losses to Urbana (100-86) and Findlay (119-87) to open the season last weekend. Against Urbana, freshman Ivan Cizmar won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.57), the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.08) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.65). Fellow freshman Julian Milinkovskyi took the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.21), the 200-yard IM (1:59.51) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.74). All three of Cizmar's races and two of Milinkovskyi's set new Lake Erie records.
