HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Gannon men's water polo team finished action at the Concordia Invitational in Huntington Beach California with a pair of setbacks. The Golden Knights fell by a 13-6 score to both host institution Concordia and California Polytechnic State University.
In the opening match, Gannon fell behind Concordia 3-1 after the first quarter. The Eagles broke open the match in the second quarter, out-scoring Gannon 5-0.
Facing a 8-1 deficit at the half, Gannon rallied for a 3-2 edge in the third quarter, but Concordia added three more scores in the final eight minutes to seal up the 13-6 win.
Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) led Gannon with two goals while
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki),
Jake Ouellette (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch),
Cody Sherman (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and
Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) all had one score.
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had six blocks in goal.
The Golden Knights would suffer their second loss of the day by an identical score, as Cal Poly used a 9-0 halftime advantage to win by a final of 13-6.
Gannon was shut-out in the first half while Cal Poly scored four and five goals in the first and second quarters respectively. The Golden Knights managed a 3-1 advantage in scoring in the third quarter before each team netted three scores in the fourth.
Takagi and Sherman each had two scores for Gannon while Nimrod and Myrick both netted one goal. Zoellick had seven blocks in goal.
With the two losses, Gannon now stands at 5-14 overall. Gannon will next compete at the Division II Eastern Championship, facing Notre Dame College in the opening round on Saturday, October 22. The match is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start time.
