CONCORDIA, Calif. – The Gannon men's water polo team suffered two more losses during Saturday's action at the Concordia Invitational. The Golden Knights suffered a 16-9 loss to California Lutheran before falling to University of Redlands 14-5.
California Lutheran out-scored Gannon in each of the four quarters enroute to the 16-9 win. The Golden Knights netted two and three scores in the first and second quarters, but saw California Lutheran net four scores in each of the two frames. Gannon was out-scored 6-3 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth.
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) netted three scores while
Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had two.
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had nine blocks in goal.
In the second match, Gannon saw University of Redlands jump out to a big lead, holding a 10-2 advantage at the half. Redlands scored four times in the first quarter and six times in the second. Gannon added three goals in the second half, but couldn't dent the lead as Redlands scored four third-quarter goals to earn the 14-5 win.
Five Golden Knights scored the five goals including Takagi,
Andrew McLellan (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep),
Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South),
Louis Weyand (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and
Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep). In goal Zoellick had six blocks.
In late action on Friday night Gannon fell by a 19-3 score to California Baptist. The Lancers posted scoring advantages of 7-0 in the first quarter and 6-1 in the third quarter en route to the win. Myrick had all three of Gannon's goals while Zoelleick had five blocks in goal.
Gannon now stands at 5-12 for the year and will conclude action at the Concordia Invitational on Sunday, October 16 with matches at noon against host Concordia and 2 p.m. against California Polytechnic State.
