Daisuke Takagi scored multiples goals during both of Gannon's losses on the first day of the Concordia Invitational.
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Gannon men's water polo team suffered two losses to open Friday's action at the Claremont Convergence tournament. The Golden Knights lost to Vanguard 14-11 before falling to Fresno Pacific 13-4.

In the opening match, Gannon out-scored Vanguard in two of the four quarters, but the Lions posted a 5-0 edge in the fourth quarter to pull out the come-from-behind win.

Gannon pulled ahead 3-2 in the first quarter before both teams netted three scores in the second, giving the Golden Knights a 6-5 edge at the half. Gannon increased their lead to two after the third quarter by out-scoring Vanguard 5-4. However, the Lions exploded for five goals in the fourth quarter and held Gannon scoreless to earn the 14-11 win.

Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) led Gannon with three goals while Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor), Jake Ouellette (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) each had two. Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had eight blocks in goal.

In the second match, the Golden Knights were unable to erase an early 5-1 deficit as Fresno Pacific out-scored Gannon in three of the four quarters.

The Sunbirds opened the match with a 5-1 lead after the first eight minutes. The scoring in the second quarter was even with two scores each, putting the Gannon down 7-3 at the half. However, Fresno Pacific blanked the Golden Knights in the third quarter posting a 4-0 advantage in goals. The Sunbirds added two goals in the fourth while Gannon scored once to account for the 13-4 final.

Takagi was again the Golden Knights' top scorer with two goals. Nelson and Ben Feasley (Takoma Park, Md. / Montgomery Blair) each had one score. Improving his total from earlier in the day, Zoellick finished with nine blocks in goal.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-9 overall this season. Fresno Pacific improved to 9-17 overall while Vanguard now stands at 6-17.
