CHEYNEY, Pa. - The first-ever trip to Cheyney's Cope Hall was not a good one for the Gannon men's basketball team. Cheyney hit 14-of-28 three-pointers, held Gannon to zero three-point field goals and rolled to an 85-66 victory Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action.
Gannon grabbed its only lead of the day when
Stephen Battle (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) drained a jumper on the opening possession. Cheyney followed with a 28-5 run over the next 11:12 and held the upper hand the rest of the way. The Wolves hit six three-pointers during the stretch, including three consecutive triples that capped the run.
Meanwhile, Gannon missed all six shots and turned the ball over five times during the first 4:40 of the run. Overall, the Golden Knights were 1-of-9 from the field and committed nine turnovers.
The Cheyney lead hovered between 17 and 21 points for the remainder of the half, before the Wolves took a 45-26 advantage into the intermission. The home team went 8-of-13 from three-point range and produced an 18-2 edge in points off turnovers in the first half.
Cheyney opened the second half with nine consecutive points and then gradually built its largest lead of the afternoon at 74-40 with 10:19 remaining. Gannon later scored the final 14 points of the game to account for the final 85-66 score.
Battle led Gannon's offensive unit with 18 points and five rebounds, hitting 5-of-10 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws. The true freshman fell two points shy of his season-high set two games earlier against Millersville.
Tanner Furno (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) came off the bench to reach double digits for the third time in the last four games. The sophomore forward scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. He was 5-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Kelvin Agee (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) completed Gannon's trio of double-digit scorers with 12 points despite battling foul trouble all game. He has reached double digits in nine of 10 games this season.
Gannon shot 42.6 percent (20-47) from the field, zero percent (0-4) from three-point range and 81.3 percent (26-32) from the free throw line. It marked the first time Gannon failed to hit a three-pointer since a 77-67 victory at Lake Superior State on January 8, 2004. The four triple attempts were the program's lowest single-game mark since taking only four that same day at Lake Superior State.
Five Cheyney players reached double digits in scoring, led by David Burton's 22 points. Amarildo Matos and Rob Townsend followed with 17 points each. Sharif Bray and Bruce Kennedy chipped in 13 markers apiece. Those five players combined for all of Cheyney's three-point attempts. Burton and Townsend highlighted the aerial warfare with four three-pointers each.
Cheyney shot 54.5 percent (30-55) from the floor, 50 percent (14-28) from behind the arc and 52.4 percent (11-21) from the charity stripe. The Wolves became the fourth team to hit double-digit three-pointers against the Golden Knights this season. They became the first team to shoot 54.5 percent or higher against Gannon since Urbana shot 55.6 percent during a season-opening 73-43 victory (Nov. 21, 2009) at the Hammermill Center last year.
Gannon saw its season-high five-game win streak come to an end, dropping to 7-3 overall and 0-3 on the road. Cheyney improved to 9-2 with its third consecutive win. The Golden Knights conclude their PSAC crossover road swing Sunday, January 9 at Shippensburg. The Red Raiders handed Clarion its first defeat of the season this afternoon by a 69-63 count. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. It can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the Internet at
