ERIE, Pa. - On a day when Gannon Athletics inducted long-range bomber Steve Moyer into the Hall of Fame, it was a missed three-pointer near the end of regulation that helped the California (Pa.) men's basketball team escape the Hammermill Center with a 72-70 victory. The decision snapped Gannon's 10-game home win streak.
Saturday's contest was played on even terms throughout both halves as neither team led by more than eight points. Cal opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers and owned an eight-point lead on three different occasions in the first nine minutes.
Gannon eventually tied the game at 28 with 5:02 left in the first half and took a 35-32 lead on Kelvin Agee's (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) three-point play at the 1:33 mark. Moments later, Cal went into the halftime locker room with a ton of momentum and a 37-36 lead after Joe Berenato drained a long three from the left wing as time expired.
California regained the upper hand with a quick 6-0 run early in the second half. Steve Swiech's three-point play with 15:48 showing on the clock gave the visitors a 46-39 lead.
Trailing 49-42, Gannon forged the game's fourth tie with an 11-4 run. Danard Crouch (Syracuse, N.Y./Anthony Henninger) ignited the run with a three-pointer. A Steve Piotrowicz (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) triple brought the Golden Knights within one point, before Agee's triple at the 12:20 mark tied the contest at 53.
The lead exchanged hands 10 times in the final 11 minutes of regulation, including four times in the final two minutes when Agee twice hit jumpers to give Gannon a one-point lead. The final shot gave the Golden Knights a 70-69 lead with 1:10 to play. Quentin Harding answered with a baseline jumper with 45 seconds left. Gannon had one last shot to win the game, but a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left was off the mark. The Vulcans then added a free throw to account for the final 72-70 score.
Agee led all scorers with 25 points. The redshirt freshman has reached double digits in scoring 13 times this season and has now reached the 20-point plateau four times.
Stephen Battle (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) chipped in 17 points and nine rebounds, missing a double-double by two rebounds or less for the fourth time this season. Crouch had 11 points off the bench. Piotrowicz ran the offense with a career-high seven assists and only two turnovers.
Gannon shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the field, 42.9 percent (9-21) from three-point range and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free throw line.
All five Cal starters reached double digits in scoring. Harding led the way with 17 points. Chad Tipton and Rashawd Hatten added 12 points each. Berenato and Swiech chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
