ERIE, Pa. - The No. 8 Gannon women's lacrosse team rattled off the first eight goals and rolled to a 16-3 victory against Edinboro Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest at Gannon University Field.
In the process, Gannon clinched a spot in next week's PSAC Tournament. The Lady Knights will enter the tournament as the Western Division's third seed and will play at the second seed in the quarterfinals. Lock Haven and Mercyhurst are still competing for the top two seeds.
Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) scored four times and
Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) found the back of the net three times during Gannon's initial 8-0 blitz.
Edinboro momentarily stopped the bleeding on Shelby Will's 16th goal of the season with 9:43 left in the first half. However, Gannon responded with the final five goals of the half and went to the intermission with a commanding 13-1 advantage. Five different players scored during the run. Millerd's fifth goal of the half with 10 seconds left on the clock ended the first-half scoring.
Only five goals were scored in the second half. Gannon netted the first three.
Jenna Hughes (Morgantown, W.Va./University) recorded her sixth goal of the season 2:12 into the half, before Millerd added her sixth and seventh scores of the match.
Kristin Sann tallied two goals in the final six minutes to account for the final 16-3 score. The goals represented Sann's 30th and 31st of the campaign.
Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) inched closer to the school's all-time assist record with a season-high seven assists. The senior is two assists shy of Lauren Bevington's (2002-05) career record of 182. Nelson also scored a goal, giving her a season-high eight points on the day.
Millerd was on the receiving end of most of those passes, scoring a season-high seven goals. Eshenour and
Sarah Grzybinski (New Market, Md./Linganore) tallied four and two goals, respectively. Nelson, Hughes and
Caitlyn Fisher (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) completed the scoring with one goal each.
Acacia Cook (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) started the match in goal, allowing one score and making three saves in 30 minutes.
Alexa Walnoha (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) played the second half, also turning away three shots while surrendering two goals in 30 minutes.
Gannon improved to 10-6 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC West with its third consecutive victory. Head coach Steve Wagner's club has reached double digits in victories during each of the last six seasons. Edinboro fell to 3-13 overall and 0-9 in conference play. The Lady Knights conclude the regular season Saturday, April 24 at Slippery Rock. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
