BELMONT, N.C. - The No. 10 Gannon women's lacrosse team concluded a successful Spring Break trip Saturday afternoon with an 18-11 victory at Belmont Abbey.
The match started a little rocky for Gannon as Belmont Abbey rattled off the first three goals. However, the Lady Knights quickly regrouped and tied the contest with three scores of their own.
Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) tallied two of the three with
Krista Schunk (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) adding the third.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the majority of the first half and were deadlocked at eight late in the period. Schunk and
Sarah Grzybinski (New Market, Md./Linganore) then found the back of the net in the final 1:22 to help Gannon grab a 10-8 lead at the break.
The second half belonged to Gannon. The Lady Knights rolled off three straight goals in the first 5:04 of the final stanza. In all, the squad held Belmont Abbey scoreless for eight minutes and 21 seconds that spanned both halves.
Taryn Millerd's (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) goal capped a 6-0 run and pushed the Gannon lead to 13-8 with 24:56 to play.
Leading 14-10, Gannon put the game away with four consecutive goals. Schunk and
Jess Fugate (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) split the four scores evenly during the run. Belmont Abbey scored one more time at the 5:14 mark, but couldn't draw closer than the 18-11 final.
Schunk (5 goals), Eshenour (4 goals, 1 assist) and Millerd (3 goals, 2 assists) led the offensive unit with five points each. Fugate and
Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) netted two goals apiece. Grzybinski and
Rachel DerCola (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) completed the scoring with one goal each.
Gannon out-shot Belmont Abbey 35-27, including a 17-8 edge in the second half.
Acacia Cook (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) recorded 10 saves in goal.
Head coach Steve Wagner's club finished its Spring Break trip with a 2-1 record. Belmont Abbey dropped to 1-3. The Lady Knights return to action Friday, March 12 against Notre Dame (Ohio) at Gannon University Field. The home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m.
