Gannon Baseball Splits Doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday Afternoon

Freshman Michael Tomko hit a grand slam in Gannon's win over West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday.
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Gannon University baseball team split a doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan at the Russ-Matt Invitational Tuesday. Wesleyan won the first contest 4-2 and the Golden Knights bounced back to take the second game 14-11.

Ross Ware led the Bobcats in the first game, throwing 6 2/3 innings and holding GU to just two runs. Wesleyan scored two runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) drove in a run for the Knights.

The nightcap was a different story, as Gannon scored twice in the top of the first and WVWC scored four times in the bottom half of the frame. GU added seven runs in the third and then tacked on five more runs late to hold off a Bobcat rally and win the three-run game.

Michael Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) hit a grand slam in the third, going 3-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Kyle Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) contributed two RBIs apiece.

Gannon (3-3) will face Findlay Thursday, March 4, in its next contests. The doubleheader is set for an 11 a.m. start. A complete box score for Tuesday's games will be available upon the team's return to Erie next weekend.
