EDINBORO, Pa. - Justin Moore recorded his third double-double in the last four games as the Edinboro men's basketball team salvaged a season split against Gannon with a 69-60 victory Wednesday night at the McComb Fieldhouse.
Gannon controlled the first seven minutes of the contest, jumping out to an 11-6 lead with 13:08 showing on the first-half clock.
Steve Piotrowicz (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) snapped a 6-6 tie with a jumper, before
George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Broad Run) hit a three-pointer for a five-point advantage.
Edinboro responded with a mini 6-1 run to knot the score at 12 with 10:17 left in the half. Three minutes later, five straight points by Al Muteba on a three-pointer and jumper pushed the Fighting Scots into a 24-18 lead. The home team's advantage ballooned to 28-20, before Gannon scored six of the final eight points of the half. A lay-up by
Anthony Simmons (Rochester, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) with 11 seconds on the clock cut the halftime deficit to 30-26.
The second half was mostly controlled by Edinboro, who slowly built its lead into double digits 6:20 into the final stanza. A three-pointer by Chris Bess pushed the Edinboro lead to 49-36 with 12:37 remaining.
Gannon continued to fight and pulled within 54-49 after a 13-5 run over a span of 6:37. The Golden Knights held the Fighting Scots without a field goal for 5:21 during the stretch which consisted of 1-for-9 overall shooting. Two Piotrowicz free throws and a Simmons three-point play brought the Golden Knights within five points.

John T. Reilly's club inched closer, drawing within 60-56 on Johnson's three-point play with 2:44 remaining. However, Byron Knight answered with arguably the biggest shot of the night. The junior guard stymied the Gannon run with a three-pointer from the right wing. The long-range bomb pushed the Edinboro advantage back to seven points (63-56) and Fighting Scots coasted to a 69-60 victory.
Johnson headlined the Gannon offensive attack with 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists. He reached the 20-point plateau for the eighth time this season. Simmons netted 13 points while
Tanner Furno (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) reached double digits off the bench for the fourth straight game with 10 points.
Gannon shot 39.2 percent (20-51) from the field, 11.1 percent (1-9) from three-point range and 82.6 percent (19-23) from the free throw line.
Edinboro's Knight led all scorers with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists. Moore added 11 points and 13 rebounds. It was his sixth double-double of the season.
The Fighting Scots shot 35.4 percent (23-65) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-19) from behind the arc and 65.2 percent (15-23) from the charity stripe.
Gannon dropped to 11-13 overall and 6-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. The Golden Knights are tied with Mercyhurst for third place, one game behind Clarion for the right to host a PSAC Quarterfinal home game. Gannon and Mercyhurst hold a two-game lead over California (Pa.), Slippery Rock and Edinboro with three games to play for the final two post-season spots. The Fighting Scots improved to 10-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play with Wednesday's victory.
