ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University baseball team lost two games to Lock Haven at GU Field Saturday afternoon. LHU won 7-4 and 13-6 to sweep the doubleheader and the weekend series.
The Bald Eagles started quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Gannon (7-35, 4-20 PSAC) took the lead in the third frame, scoring three times.
Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) singled to leftfield and then
Jim Travers (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) had a base hit to right.
Brandon Crum (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) followed with a bunt single to load the bases.
Ford Eisenman (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) reached on a fielder's choice as the Lock Haven third baseman made an error on the throw to home plate, scoring Hoffman.
Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game and then
Eric Harpster's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) groundball drove in Crum.
Lock Haven (21-31, 13-11 PSAC) answered with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead and did not look back. They added two more scores in the sixth to secure their lead.
Andrew Petersen (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) threw two innings of shutout relief for the Golden Knights, allowing three hits. Hoffman went 2-3 with a run scored, while Travers and Crum each had two hits and scored a run as well.
In the second game, GU fell behind early again. LHU took a 3-0 lead after two innings before the Knights got on the board in the third. Lipp singled to leftfield with two outs and then Harpster homered to deep centerfield to cut the deficit to one. However, the Eagles responded with a six-run fourth to take control of the contest.
Harpster went 3-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Travers,
Frank Jagoda (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk Senior), and
Shaine Patsilevas (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) each recorded two hits for Gannon.
The series wraps up conference play for the Knights this season. They will host Geneva (Pa.) Wednesday, April 29, at Gannon University Field. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be the home finale for the 2009 season.
