Gannon Softball Team Drops Pair of Extra-Inning Affairs at Mansfield

Junior Kadie Ondrus recorded Gannon's only two RBI during Saturday's doubleheader at Mansfield.
MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Gannon softball team worked overtime twice Saturday afternoon at Mansfield, but suffered defeat both times. The Mountaineers opened the non-conference doubleheader with a 4-3 eight-inning victory, before completing the sweep with a 1-0 11-inning decision.

In the opener, Gannon jumped in front first with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay) drove in the first two runs with a bases-loaded single. Chastity Guerrero (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) was the third Lady Knight to cross the plate when she scored on a wild pitch.

Gannon held the lead until Mansfield tied the contest with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Ashley Gaisser's two-out, three-run double. The Mountaineers then won it with three consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the eighth. The final one by Gaisser drove in the winning run.

Five different Lady Knights recorded a hit in the first game. Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) dropped to 6-5 on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. The senior struck out four and walked two.

In the nightcap, neither team was able to dent the scoreboard until Mansfield scored the only run in the bottom of the 11th inning. A runner was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule, followed by a hit by pitch and a walk. Katie McConville then singled in the winning run.

Kara Hensley (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) had two of the team's five hits in the second game. Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) was the hard-luck loser, dropping to 3-3. The junior allowed one unearned run on six hits in 10 innings, striking out eight and walking three.

Gannon, ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings, dropped to 13-10 with its sixth consecutive loss. Mansfield evened its record at 10-10. The Lady Knights return to action Tuesday, March 31 against 15th-ranked California (Pa.) at Gannon University Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
