CLARION, Pa. - Good teams always bounce back. The Gannon men's basketball team bounced back again Saturday night.
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) recorded 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks during his first start since December 30 as the Golden Knights posted a 74-58 victory at Clarion.
In the process, Gannon moved to 8-0 in games following a loss over the last two seasons. The Golden Knights also won their sixth consecutive game against Clarion while completing a season sweep. The squad remained tied for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with Indiana (Pa.) while Edinboro and Slippery Rock sit one game back. Regionally, Alderson-Broaddus lost at West Virginia State Saturday night. The top three teams in the latest regional rankings suffered one loss each this week.
Clarion opened the contest with five consecutive points and led for nearly the first 13 minutes.
Pierre Howard's (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) lay-up with 6:39 remaining in the first half gave the Golden Knights their first lead of the evening at 21-19. It was part of a 13-0 run that stretched six minutes and 11 seconds. Howard scored eight of the 13 points.
George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) then hit two three-pointers 1:41 apart. His second gave Gannon a 33-21 lead with 2:14 left in the first half. The Golden Knights eventually went to the intermission with a 35-25 advantage.
Gannon owned a double-digit lead for with the entire second half with the exception of two brief periods early in the half. The Golden Knights' largest lead was 18 points on two occasions. Goldcamp's jumper with 1:45 to play accounted for the final 18-point lead at 71-53.
Goldcamp led Gannon's offensive unit with 21 points and seven rebounds during his first start since December 30. The senior forward was 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free throw line. Howard added 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) and Johnson chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Gannon shot 55.6 percent (25-45) from the field, including a 60-percent (15-25) clip in the first half. The Golden Knights shot 30 percent (3-10) from three-point range and 70 percent (21-30) from the free throw line.
Josh Yanke headlined Clarion's scoring with 21 points. Shameel Carty was the only other Golden Eagle in double digits with 14 points.
Clarion shot 35.1 percent (20-57) from the floor, 28 percent (7-25) from behind the arc, and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the latest regional rankings, improved to 19-3 overall and 8-2 in the PSAC West. Clarion dropped to 10-13 overall and 1-9 in conference play. The Golden Knights complete a three-game road swing Monday, February 16 at Lake Erie. The final non-conference game of the season tips off at 7 p.m.
