Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) poured in 23 points as the Gannon men's basketball team rolled past Clarion 79-62 Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon used a 19-7 run midway through the first half to grab a 37-21 lead on
Tyler Stoczynski's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) three-pointer with 4:34 until halftime. Shameel Carty's jumper at the buzzer send the Golden Eagles into the break with a 45-31 deficit.
Head coach
John T. Reilly's club produced a 12-2 run early in the second half to increase its lead to 63-39 at the 11-minute mark. Clarion was unable to get closer than 14 points the rest of the way as the Golden Knights posted a 79-62 victory.
Lindsey led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 7-of-12 shots and three shots from behind the arc. Stoczynski had 14 points in his first start of the season while
George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) chipped in 11 markers.
Gannon shot 46.7 percent (28-60) from the field, including a 56.5-percent (13-23) clip in the second half. The Golden Knights shot 50 percent (9-18) from three-point range and 82.4 percent (14-17) from the free throw line.
Carty and Josh Yanke led Clarion with 17 points each. The Golden Eagles shot 46 percent (23-50) from the field, 36.4 percent (4-11) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (12-16) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II, improved to 12-2 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West. Clarion dropped to 9-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, January 21 against Slippery Rock at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
