ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Gannon men's water polo team concluded the final day of the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament Sunday afternoon with a split, defeating Queens (N.Y.) 10-9 and falling to NCAA Division I Fordham 9-6.
In the opener, Gannon and Queens battled to a 2-2 tie after one quarter. The Golden Knights took a 6-5 lead into halftime, before both teams traded second-half goals. Both squads scored three times in the third quarter and once in the fourth.
Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) led the offensive unit with a hat trick. Michael Piper (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake), Dmitriy Simonoff (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson), and Richie DiLoreto (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added two goals each.
Kyle Kuser (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) completed the scoring with one score. Darren Stone (Johannesburg, South Africa/Glenwood Boys) made 11 saves in goal.
In the nightcap, the two teams again battled to a 2-2 tie after one quarter. Gannon recorded the only second-quarter goal and went to halftime with a 3-2 advantage. However, Fordham rallied with a 5-2 edge in the third quarter and put the match away by out-scoring the Golden Knights 2-1 in the final period.
Kent Campos (Orange, Calif./Tustin) led the way with two goals. Ben Syme (Victoria, B.C./Claremont Secondary), Piper, DiLoreto, and Naranjo posted one goal each. Stone turned away 17 shots in goal.
Gannon ended its opening weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament with a 2-2 record. Queens dropped to 0-2 with its loss to Gannon. Fordham's updated record was not available. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, September 20 with a pair of road matches at Washington & Jefferson and Salem International.
