Gannon Men's Water Polo Falls to NCAA Division I Fordham

Dmitriy Simonoff's hat trick almost got Gannon past NCAA Division I Fordham.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team battled NCAA Division I Fordham to a 7-7 halftime tie, but the Rams out-scored the Golden Knights 5-1 in the third quarter en route to a 13-10 victory Sunday afternoon.

Fordham grabbed a 3-1 lead after one quarter, but Gannon rallied with a 6-4 edge in the second frame. Following Fordham's 5-1 third-quarter outburst, the Golden Knights out-scored the Rams 2-1 in the final eight minutes.

Dmitriy Simonoff (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) and Michael Piper (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) both recorded hat tricks. Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) added two goals.

Richie DiLoreto (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) completed the scoring with one score each. Darren Stone (Johannesburg, South Africa/Glenwood Boys) recorded 12 saves in goal.

Gannon dropped to 10-8 with Sunday's loss. Fordham improved to 12-9. The Golden Knights return to action November 8-9 at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championships hosted by Princeton University.
