LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team concluded a busy day with a split Saturday night at the Bucknell Tournament. The Golden Knights opened the tournament with a 7-6 victory over Division I George Washington, before falling to John Hopkins 17-6.
In the opener,
Dmitriy Simonoff (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) scored the game-winner on a penalty shot in the fourth quarter. Both teams scored once in the first quarter, twice in the second quarter, and once in the third quarter. The Golden Knights posted a 3-2 edge in the decisive fourth quarter.
Simonoff recorded a hat trick in the victory.
Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) had two goals.
Michael Piper (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) and
Richie DiLoreto (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored one goal each.
Darren Stone (Johannesburg, South Africa/Glenwood Boys) turned away nine shots in goal.
In the nightcap, Johns Hopkins shut out Gannon 7-0 in the third quarter and rolled to a 17-6 victory. After a 2-2 first quarter, Johns Hopkins went to halftime with a 7-4 lead. The Blue Jays extended their lead to 14-4 after three quarters, before out-scoring the Golden Knights 3-2 in the final frame.
DiLoreto posted a hat trick in the loss. Naranjo scored twice while Simonoff completed the scoring. Stone recorded 11 blocks.
Gannon moved its record to 9-5 after going 2-1 on Saturday. The Golden Knights began the day with a 14-4 home victory over Washington & Jefferson at 9 a.m. George Washington fell to 7-16 while Johns Hopkins improved to 10-12.
Gannon concludes play at the Bucknell Tournament Sunday, October 19 against the U.S. Naval Academy at 12:30 p.m.
