Weinell started the 2012-13 wrestling campaign with a bang, winning the 141-pound division at the Mercyhurst Open. The redshirt freshman went 4-0 en route to his individual title. He opened the day by pinning Lake Erie's Nick Bloch in two minutes and two seconds. Weinell followed with an 8-1 victory against Mercyhurst's Joey Miller and another pin of West Virginia's Sean Fee in one minute and 51 seconds. He then captured the title after receiving a forfeit from Seton Hill's Fisher.
