CALEDONIA, Mich. – Gannon opened the 2026 season on the road Saturday afternoon, falling 32-20 to Davenport at Richard J. Pappas Stadium.
The Golden Knights answered Davenport's first-quarter touchdown on their first drive of the second quarter, marching 99 yards on 12 plays after a goal-line stand by the Gannon defense, led by
Jeremiah Lovely (Jacksonville, Fla./Andrew Jackson) and
Larry Hart III (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis).
Ty Hurst (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) capped the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to
Donell Mason (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) to tie the game at 7-7.
Davenport regained the lead later in the second quarter to take a 14-7 advantage into halftime before scoring twice in the third quarter to build a 27-7 lead.
Gannon battled back in the fourth quarter, with Hurst finding
Chazz Corley (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) for a 17-yard touchdown, the first of Corley's career. Hurst later scored on a one-yard run to cut the deficit to 30-20 with 4:18 remaining. The Golden Knights tried a two-point conversion following the touchdown, but Davenport returned the attempt for two points to seal the 32-20 victory.
Davenport was powered by 2025 First Team All-GLIAC and D2CCA Second Team All-Region running back Cephus Harris III, who rushed for 351 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite the setback, Mason highlighted the afternoon by becoming just the fourth player in Gannon football history to reach 2,000 career receiving yards. Mason finished with eight receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown, increasing his career total to 2,111 yards and moving into third place on Gannon's all-time receiving yards list.

- 2K for Tank: Mason became just the fourth player in Gannon history to reach 2,000 career receiving yards, joining Jesstin Hamm, Justin Caliste and Sam Culberth. Mason entered Saturday with 1,984 career yards before adding 127 against Davenport to increase his total to 2,111 yards.
- Third All-Time: Mason's performance moved him past Culberth's 2,099 yards and into third place on Gannon's career receiving yards list. He now trails only Hamm (2,394) and Caliste (2,375).
- Fifth in Receptions: Mason also increased his career total to 141 receptions, remaining fifth in program history. He entered the season with 133 career catches.
- Goal-Line Stand Sparks Gannon: The Gannon defense, led by Jeremiah Lovely (Jacksonville, Fla./Andrew Jackson) and Larry Hart III (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis), stopped Davenport on fourth down at the Gannon one-yard line late in the first quarter. On its first drive of the second quarter, Gannon marched 99 yards on 12 plays, with Hurst connecting with Mason for a 30-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
- Milestone Score: Mason reached the 2,000-yard milestone on the 30-yard touchdown reception from Hurst in the second quarter. The touchdown was also Gannon's first of the 2026 season.
- Hurst Accounts for Three: Hurst completed 17-of-25 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. The redshirt junior also scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.
- Spreading It Around: Gannon had four players record a reception, led by Mason with eight catches for 127 yards and a touchdown. NaSean Hill (Avenel, N.J./Delbarton) added five receptions for 34 yards, Chazz Corley (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) had two catches for 29 yards and his first career touchdown, while Zaheem Crawford-Patterson (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) finished with two receptions for 25 yards.
- On the Ground: Nevaeh Elliott (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) led Gannon's running backs with 26 yards on seven carries, while Hurst added 23 yards on 12 attempts and scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter. Andrew Kuban (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) rushed once for eight yards, NaSean Hill (Avenel, N.J./Delbarton) had six carries for three yards and Mason added two yards on four attempts. Gannon finished with 61 rushing yards on 31 carries.
- First for Corley: Corley's 17-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter marked the first touchdown of his Gannon career.
- Defensive Leaders: RJ Roberts (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) paced the Golden Knights with 11 tackles, including nine solo stops. Keoke Toomer (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) added 10 tackles, while Serrell Curtis (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) finished with eight.
- Perfect in the Red Zone: Gannon converted both of its trips inside the Davenport 20-yard line into touchdowns.

Gannon will have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, when the Golden Knights travel to Shepherd. Game time is set for 12 p.m. in Shepherdstown, W.Va.
