Golden Knights Split With Findlay to Close Weekend

TIFFIN, OH - The Golden Knights found their stride on offense Sunday, putting up 12 runs in the doubleheader against Findlay and earning the win in game two. 

Game one saw Gannon get off to a quick start when Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) launched a solo home run in the top of the first. Chris MUllins would also leave the yard in the sixth, but the Oilers offense showed their consistency to take the opening game. 

Game saw Gannon put together a strong game on both offense and defense. Hunter Steinke (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua) was tremendous in the start, tossing four and a third innings on the bump, allowing just two earned runs and striking out a pair. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) was even more dominant in relief, tossing the final four and two thirds and yielding just one hit, striking out a half a dozen. 

The Golden Knights will return statewide on Friday and Saturday, traveling to West Chester for four games. 

THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 1

  • Bombs Away- Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) went yard in the top of the first to give the Golden Knights an early 1-0 lead. It was the team leading third homer of the year for Soto. Later in the game, Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), playing in place of Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover), left the ballpark for his first long ball of the 2026 campaign. 
  • Double TroubleMatt Smith (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) continued his strong stretch with a hit and a run scored, while Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) each collected a pair of hits. 
  • On the Bump - Nolan Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) took the loss (0-2) in three innings of work, allowing five runs (no earned) ... Brady Berdine (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) and Zach Tkatch (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) threw the final three frames for GU
THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 2
  • Pitching Dominance -  Hunter Steinke (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua) was tremendous in the start, tossing four and a third innings on the bump, allowing just two earned runs and striking out a pair. It was just the second appearance of the season for the freshman. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) was even more dominant in relief, tossing the final four and two thirds and yielding just one hit, striking out a half a dozen. He is now 1-1 on the season and has a 1.59 ERA in three games. 
  • The Longball Continues- More souvenirs were up for grabs courtesy of GU in game two. Matt Smith (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) and Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) each hit two run home runs in the second to give GU a 4-0 lead, one that they would not relinquish. Smith would tally an RBI double later in the game. 
  • Dom's Dominance - Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) played a critical role in the middle of the lineup in game two, going 2-4 with a pair of hits and scoring twice. 
     

THE NEXT GAME

The Golden Knights will return statewide on Friday and Saturday, traveling to West Chester for four games. The games are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:30 pm on both days.
