Golden Knights Split Two Games in Saturday Home Doubleheader

ERIE, PA - The Golden Knights split the first day of the WWPA Erie Classic, defeating Mercyhurst by a 10-9 final before dropping their first conference game of the season, a 16-10 decision to Salem. 

Game one featured a back-and-forth affair that was tied after one period. A strong second, however, proved to be the difference, when the Golden Knights outscored Mercyhurst 4-1 before the half to take a three-goal lead. Maria Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/Jesuïtes Gràcia Col·legi Kostka) would tally a hat trick, while Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) secured three points in the win. Izabella Trunzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) made six saves in goal, including a critical stop late in the fourth. 

Game two was a strong start for the visiting team as Salem jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one period. Gannon would trail 11-4 at the half and despite outscoring Salem 6-5 in the final two periods, it was not enough to complete the comeback.  
 
THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 1 

  • Great Second - Gannon would outscore Mercyhurst 4-1 in the second period after the teams were level at 3-3 after one period. The frame was buoyed by two consecutive goals from Kerstyn Farley (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) at the 1:21 and 0:18 mark.
