LAST TIME AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Gannon was 16th out of 51 teams at NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, IN. GU had two all-American finishes, with
Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) (3rd) and
Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) (7th) each earned such accolades. Crosby's third place result was the highest finish by a Golden Knight since Alex Farenchak took home second place at 165 lbs. at the 2021 National Championships.
ERIE, Pa. – Fresh off a NCAA Super Regional One team championship, the season finale begins for the third ranked Golden Knights. Gannon will be sending nine competitors to the NCAA Championship meet in Sioux Falls, SD this Friday and Saturday. They are just one of two teams nationwide that had nine or more wrestlers make the national competition.
In addition to the team title, seven of the nine national qualifiers earned individual regional championships along the way. Gannon finished 46 points better than second place Kutztown.Â
Earlier last week, head coach
Tom Boyd received an award of his own, being named the NWCA Super Region One Coach of the Year.Â
Gannon earned a bevy of seeds in their respective brackets heading into competition, and they have experience as well. Two of the returning starters earned all-American status a year ago, and other transfers feature experience at the national level as well.Â
The top eight competitors in each bracket will be named all-American. Here's a look at what to expect as we get ready for the weekend:
Â
WRESTLERS TO WATCH - NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
#1Â Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep)Â (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep)Â (GR - HWT) - We will repeat our statement from the regional preview article:
There is one goal in the mind of Crosby heading into the postseason: win a national championship. The graduate student got one step closer at the regional, securing a 4-0 record and dominating his way to a second consecutive Super Regional One title at 285 pounds. Crosby was third at NCAA Championships last year; his only blemish being a second round defeat to UPJ's Isaiah Vance, whom he beat earlier in the regular season. The graduate student carries a 16-0 record with 12 extra point victories on the season, including four at regionals, and is ranked first in the Open Mat rankings. In fact, Crosby has secured a tech fall or better in eight of his last nine matches coming into national championships.Â
#2Â Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach)Â (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach)Â (R-SR - 133 lbs) - No one in the Gannon lineup has more NCAA
Championship experience than Echevarria. Already with two All-American honors in his back pocket, he is once again a strong contender to earn all-American status. The redshirt senior comes into the tournament with a 18-2 record on the season and 94 wins for his collegiate career. He finished second in the regional, losing only to the top ranked wrestler in the country at 133. Ranked second by the Open Mat and with experience in his back pocket, Echevarria will be one to watch yet again over the weekend.Â
#3 Jake Niffenegger (Mason, Ohio/La Salle) (R-JR - 141 lbs) - You could argue that Niffenegger has flown under the radar this season, and yet he will enter the national competition ranked third in the country at 141 by the Open Mat. A dominant first season with the Golden Knights, the transfer has racked up 25 wins in 27 matches this season, including 12 straight wins. He had a strong showing at the regional competition, winning his first two matches by a combined 31-11 score before winning the title at 141 pounds via medical forfeit.Â
OTHER NOTES
-
Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) has been at his best down the stretch portion of the season. He found late bout magic on Saturday. The Crawford County native would secure a victory in sudden victory in the semifinals before earning a takedown with seconds to go in the final to win the 149 pound crown at Super Regional One. He'll have momentum heading into the weekend.
-Â
Holden Huhn (Loveland, Ohio/La Salle), in just his third start of the season in tournaments, captured the 157 pound title as the fifth seed at regionals. He will be a dark horse candidate in a 157 pound bracket that will have none of the top five ranked wrestlers in America in it at NCAA Championships.Â
Â
FROM HEAD COACH TOM BOYD
"I am excited for the opportunity for our team to compete at NCAA Championships! We feel that we are at our best heading into the weekend, but that doesn't guarantee anything. Our goal is to have a strong first day and have as many people in contention for all-American status heading into day two. We also believe there are multiple people in our lineup that could contend for a national title. It's time to leave it all out there and give 110% each and every match!"
