LAST TIME AT REGIONALS
Gannon sent nine of ten competitors to NCAA Championships, taking second of a twelve team tournament.
Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) &
Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) each won regional championships in their individual weight classes (174 & 285).Â
ERIE, Pa. – Fresh off a PSAC championship, the rubber now meets the road for the third ranked Golden Knights. Gannon returns to the NCAA Super Regional One as historically one of the most successful programs in the region at this specific meet. GU sent nine of ten entrants to nationals a year ago and are primed to have a similar, if not better result this season.Â
Eight of the ten projected entrants for the Golden Knights are ranked by the Open Mat and five are in the top ten. Of the nine qualifiers from a year ago, two regional champions return for head coach
Tom Boyd:
Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), who took home the regional crown at 285 a year ago, and
Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High), who was victorious at 174. Jackson has wrestled at 184 this season.Â
The top three competitors in each bracket will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Sioux Falls, SD this March. The double-elimination tourney gets underway at 10:00 am in East Stroudsburg, PA.
Gannon's last regional team title came during the 2023-24 season, when they claimed the championship at Kutztown.Â
Here's a look at what to expect as we get ready for Saturday:
Â
WRESTLERS TO WATCH - NCAA SUPER REGIONAL ONE
#1 Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) (GR - HWT) - There is one goal in the mind of Crosby heading into the postseason: win a national championship. To get there, he will need to have another successful performance at the regional competition. Crosby took home the region title a season ago, winning by fall over Isaiah Vance, whom Crosby defeated by decision just over a week ago in the PSAC championship dual. The graduate student carries a 12-0 record with eight extra point victories on the season and is ranked first in the Open Mat rankings. IN fact, Crosby has secured a tech fall or better in four of his last five matches coming into Saturday's regional.Â
#2 Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) (R-SR - 133 lbs) - Already with two All-American honors in his back pocket, Echevarria is also a contender to take home the national title, should he advance past the regional stage. He was third a year ago at the Super Regional One competition but went on to place seventh at NCAA Championships. The redshirt senior comes into the tournament with a 16-1 record on the season and 92 wins for his collegiate career. Ranked second by the Open Mat, he has won 16 matches in a row. His only loss on the season? A 1-0 decision to the current number one ranked wrestler at 133 in the opening match of the year. With experience in his back pocket, Echevarria will be one to watch yet again on Saturday.Â
#3 Jake Niffenegger (Mason, Ohio/La Salle) (R-JR - 141 lbs) - You could argue that Niffenegger has flown under the radar this season, and yet he will enter the regional competition ranked third in the country at 141 by the Open Mat. A dominant first season with the Golden Knights, the transfer has racked up 22 wins in 24 matches this season, including nine straight wins. He has had strong showing in tournaments this season, including picking up a win at the Mount Union Invitational and a fourth place result at the Midwest Classic. He's also picked up five wins via fall this season.
#6 Grant MacKay (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) (R-SO - 165 lbs) - 26 wins and 16 that yielded extra points, Mackay has been exactly what head coach
Tom Boyd had hoped for in the middle of Gannon's lineup. The redshirt sophomore is on a three match win streak and has won 12 of his last 13 bouts. MacKay already has two tournament victories on the season (Mount Union Invite, Bob Del Rosa Open) and picked up a third place result at the Midwest Classic.Â

FROM HEAD COACH TOM BOYD
"This is the best time of the year! The talking and the rankings are all done. When this team came together at the beginning of the season they set big goals. We have prepared all season for these moments. Now we need to go out and finish the job. We're excited for the opportunity to compete and believe if we put our best foot forward, we can have an incredibly successful day."
